Any recent chemical engineering LSU grads?

My son is finishing his sophomore year at OU and last night he got accepted for a summer-long chem engineering REU research program. Anyone done this program or know someone who recently has done it? It sounds great but the details on the website are a bit light. Just wondering if anyone can tell me what he should expect.

I would have my kid in a summer co-op program with one of the chem plants as soon as they have the opportunity.
Those who are good they bring back each summer and offer jobs to at graduation at above market salaries.

All experience is good experience
If he can't get an internship this summer, do this

Those REUs are only good if he wants to go into a PhD. Or he can use it as a bit of experience towards an internship/coop
If he wants to go into industry, he needs an internship or a co-op. If he’s finishing his sophomore year, this is a critical point for him to do that or he’ll struggle to find something after his junior year. If you don’t have industry experience, you’ll have trouble getting in the door even with a good GPA after graduating

Thanks very much for the insight, everyone.
He applied for several internships but hasn't heard back from any. This program accepted him yesterday, but we may wait another week or two before he officially commits, just to see if any internship offers come through. I think the summer program experience will be good for him, but it sounds like the internship or co-op would be better towards his career.

If he wants to work in a plant, interning through them is the way to go.

Either way he needs to find out. I did 3 co-op semesters at a plant, and the most important thing I learned is that I didn't want to work at a plant. Also it was boss money for a college kid.

I can tell you in oil & gas the intern thing can be touch and go right now with the uncertainty in the market for the next several months. It's not nearly as bad as 2020 yet, when internships and even "promised" jobs for interns who were graduating in May got yanked. Thank God.
But if he didn't get on by beginning of this year, it's possible the positions still "posted" may be some that companies end up choosing not to fill.
I have a kid in ChemE at LSU. They're lucky to have something line up for this summer (not O&G this go-round) that seems for now like it'll stick, but some of his/her colleagues seem concerned.

He needs to apply to as many internship program as possible…not just several. The Bigs (XOM, Shell, etc) are tough to get into, but there are tons out there if you look hard enough

The interview process for those makes me shake my head. Those outfits think their shite don’t stink.

He would have a decent idea if an internship offer was going to come through. He should start applying to fall and spring co-ops at every single company he can find and list the REU experience on his resume for this summer, so they know he will be doing something. He may have to graduate a semester late, though LSU has made it a lot easier to do a co-op and graduate on time
For companies to apply to, he can sort publicly traded companies for Oil & Gas, Chemicals, Industrial Gas, Manufacturing, and apply to all of those companies. He should spend a week grinding out awful online applications

The funny thing is that's where I always wanted to work. Where the rubber meets the road. To each their own. I still love to get into a plant when I can for work. Everything there is real.

I am an Engineering manager at one of the Bigs, and the hiring process and targets are….changing

yeah.. I quizzed him this afternoon.. he cherry-picked only a few. Next year it's the buckshot approach.

Two questions if I may: what kinds of changes? And - which are considered 'The Bigs" ?

I cannot emphasize this enough.
