Anyone Remember Swensen’s Ice Cream/Restaurants?

I remember going to one as a child and it was always packed and loud. Then, as I entered adolescence, the place just became dead and closed soon thereafter.
I remember the Earthquake which was like a sundae with six scoops of ice cream. Whenever one was ordered they would flip the lights on and off and everyone would yell EARTHQUAKE and bang on pots and pans as it was brought to the table.
They also served their ice cream with thin crispy wafer cookies, had a good fudge brownie ice cream cake, and made huge hamburgers and sandwiches served with a pickle spear and long toothpick with ribbon tie.
I haven’t seen one in forever. Looked them up and at one time they had 400 stores. Now they have two: the original in San Francisco and one in Miami.

Yes. Do you remember A&W Drive Inn's where they would bring you real root beer floats in a real frozen glass mug and hang the tray off your car window? Because that place made Swensen's seem like amateur hour.

I do and it was a neat place. There was one in Longview and to the other point, Texarkana had an A&W in the 70's. A&W was awesome.

We had one in Memphis when I was kid. There was an ice skating rink next to it. So it was always a treat to go to.

We used to hit the one in Metairie every Friday night.
They were packed. My dad used to get the Sunday in that awesome glass, with all the chocolate evenly distributed everywhere. It was sad when the cookies were gone. You were stuck with just ice cream, chocolate, whipped cream, and the cherry with no method of delivery other than the spoon.

I most remember their bubble gum ice cream. Would get a scoop on a sugar cone... those things would chip a tooth.

Yep, a bunch of my friends worked there

I'd much prefer going to a place like Swenson's or Farrell's back in the day than all the lousy slab joints that proliferated over the past 20 years. They have limited flavors and menu, save for the toppings to add in. Haagen Daaz stores are hard to find now, too.
Kids today will never know an ice cream soda or sherbet freeze. Even baskin robbins scaled their menu way back. For all the fatties, ice cream joints aren't as good anymore.

No but my dad does and he says the same as you: frozen mug floats were so good.

Swensen’s was the best. Great memories going there as a kid.

I always associate that style of light with Swensons.

Used to be one on Greenville Avenue in Dallas, in the same strip center where Mariano's was. I went there in the 80's.

They tried to make a comeback few years ago. They built one along with a long john silvers in Greenville about 7 years ago. It lasted maybe 2 years. The food was awful
