The 1986 FBI Miami shootout was a gun battle that occurred on April 11, 1986, in an unincorporated region of Dade County in South Florida (renamed Miami-Dade in 1997) between eight FBI agents and two serial bank robbers. During the firefight, FBI Special Agents Jerry L. Dove and Benjamin P. Grogan were killed, while five other agents were wounded. The two robbery suspects, William Russell Matix and Michael Lee Platt, were also killed.
The incident is infamous in FBI history and is well-studied in law enforcement circles. Despite outnumbering the suspects 4 to 1, the agents found themselves pinned down by suppressive rifle fire and unable to respond effectively. Although both Matix and Platt were hit multiple times during the shootout, Platt fought on and continued to wound and kill agents. This incident led to the introduction of more powerful handguns in the FBI and many police departments around the United States. Wiki LINK

todays 9 mm cartridge is so much better than the 9mm of 86, thanks in part to this

Every 10mm owner knows the story of this day and the subsequent bastardized .40 s&w that was spawned from limp wristed agents

May not have ever had a .40 without that dumpster fire.

And we'd have been just fine. Anybody who's done the shite for real knows it's about placement, not caliber.

Sooooo... what happened here, 11 years later?
North Hollywood Shootout
This has finally been addressed through tragedies.

I love watching that one robber get capped, go to about 13:20.

The US Military had a similar situation with underpowered .38's

combat reports arose from the Philippines campaign regarding the poor performance of the M1892's .38-caliber ammunition. Specifically, users complained that the .38 bullet repeatedly failed to stop charging enemy tribesmen at close ranges, even when hit multiple times. The complaints caused the U.S. Army to hurriedly issue stocks of .45 caliber revolvers

North Hollywood was the real origin of the modern day militarized police force.

I've got one of those .45 revolvers. Bitch to get ammo for without using the moon or half moon clips.

North Hollywood was straight out of the movie Heat. That shite is wild AF.
Would love a high budget movie from a solid director about either of these events.

Nothing compared to the North Hollywood shootout IMO.

The account of the Florida shootout was harrowing. It lasted only 5 minutes but 145 rounds fired.

I wonder how many were fired in the N. Hollywood shootout. It had to be in the hundreds.
I was in an airport changing planes. As I walked down the concourse to my connecting flight, I noticed way more than the usual amount of people focused on the TVs. I caught the very tail end of the shootout live. It was bizarre to see that on live TV.
A year or two later, I was at Industrial Safety and Health trade show at the L.A. Convention Center. They had a LAPD car on display that had been in the center of the shootout. That thing looked like Swiss cheese it had so many holes in it. The driver's side airbag had even deployed.

You know that .223/5.56mm is a smaller caliber round than a 9mm, right? Rifles offer rifle ballistics and easier shot-placement at extended ranges, neither of which are "caliber".
9mm vs. .40S&W vs. .45ACP...matters VERY little. Shot placement is what counts. Most people also shoot smaller calibers more accurately, so to a certain extent, smaller is better.

Estimated about 2,000
Steel-tipped bullets. Head-to-toe body armor. They could have gotten away and decided to stay and fight because they thought (correctly, as it turned out) they had superior firepower two against twenty or thirty. Bullets were going through and through on police cars while the cops were getting direct hits on Philips and the Romanian guy, and they weren't even phased.

In this video Paul demonstrates the two platforms power differences using different ammunition.

I think only one Agent had a 9mm and he was shot in his strong hand. The FBI was outgunned and out fought.
It was .38 special that let the agents down and cost lives. I think one of the wounded guys killed both of them with a 12 guage.
It's been awhile since I read the report, so forgive any mistakes.
RIP Special Agents.

You should see the presentation they do on this shoot out at the FBI academy.....it is impressive!
It was but the agent was shot in his strong hand and had to pump the shotgun by tossing it in the air and catching it by the pump.
