Are there any downsides to buying a VW Golf TDI as a daily driver?

Looks like I'll soon have to start going to the office again regularly and will need a car. Looking for a nice commuter car with great gas mileage. I came across a few TDIs nearby that I could get for less than $18K with 30-40K miles. Are there any downsides to getting a TDI in this day and age? They apparently give like 30+ mpg in the city and 40+ on the highway.

I thought all the TDI's got caught up in the emissions scandal and were bought back/crushed.

There is a high probability that you will catch Fahrvergnugen .

Where are you seeing those Golfs for sale?

Find an older Toyota Echo, dirt cheap, run forever, 40mpg.

Easy oil changes is the downside.
We had a Tiguan. Ran by Wally World to get a quick oil change. No filters. None at my local shop either. Had to go to VW.
Otherwise, it was a great vehicle.

Maintenance is a bitch. Gaskets, seals, and switches will go bad left and right. VW is junk, hence why they depreciate so quickly.
If you want a hot hatch, look at the Civic Si or Focus ST.

I hear the electronics fail on older vws and cost a boatload to fix. Google it.

It's diesel so can I put truck nuts on it?

Great cars, highly recommend. I drove a 2014 Passat TDI for 2 years with zero issues other than almost running out of DEF once. Had the same drivetrain as the Golfs.
Averaged about 33 mpg mostly in-town driving, 35-50 mpg highway depending on how fast you drive. The Golf is a little smaller and lighter so it should do a little better on fuel.
Change the oil regularly, do a transmission service every 40k-60k miles and it'll run for a long time. I sell used cars and have sold 20-30 modern Jetta/Golf/Passat TDIs with close to 200k miles that were running and driving flawlessly. They're very popular as commuter cars here in Montana given our long distances and high speed limits.
ETA
Another recommendation I have is a newer Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, they should be priced about the same as the Golfs you've been seeing with similar miles. They are very nice quiet comfortable cars. Imagine if a newer Impala/Malibu had a baby with a Prius. My coworker has one and uses it for a 52-mile commute from Bozeman to Whitehall, he charges it at work and at home and barely uses any gas at all. Averages about 125 mpg. Hard to beat that. He can make 90% of the drive on EV only in the summer.

I think the federal air quality mandates have ruined diesels, no?

Modern diesels aren't worth it. Common rail high pressure fuel pump, diesel particular filters, DEF, regens....and if you get a TDI with an auto it will be dual clutch.
VW services is much higher than Toyota/Honda too.
I had a TDI that got bought back because of the scandal.
