Should be noted that they do have distinctive personalities. Our Aussie could be best described as "bossy" and opinionated. She was like having a very athletic nanny.
My daughter had a rescue that was very laid back and gentle. She was extremely sweet, though a bit skittish because of her first situation. It took her a while to warm up to you, unlike our Aussie who seemed to think that she who died with the biggest herd won.

My father in law is on his 3rd Duck Tolling retriever and 2/3 don't retrieve and the 3rd sucks at it. I was honestly blown away as they look like a small golden. Now he is a lazy owner and I don't think they do much training at all, but they live on acreage. Outside of that they are good dogs that I've seen.

Know of any local breeders for either?
Highly recommend Wonderdog in Covington. Shelly breeds beautiful, versatile Aussies, excelling in the show ring as well as performance events.
After hearing all the pros and cons in this thread, if anyone is still considering an Aussie, give her a call.
Be honest about what you are looking for, and she'll give you feedback as to whether her lines, or any Aussie, would be a good fit.
And since I can't believe we've gotten this far without a single pic, here's my girl.

My parents had a duck toller and she was awesome. Wasn’t too needy, excellent at frisbee. Great watch dog.

Everyone is dead on about the Aussie.
Exercise them or they will drive you nuts.

I love my merle, but tris have some gorgeous coloring, especially around the eyes.
She's beautiful!

Have an Aussie. Funny, when we were looking for a new pup it was between those two as well. Tollers are harder to find than Aussies. Better have a place for the Toller to swim- after all it is a retriever. Tollers are not as high energy as an Aussie, but just as demanding for exercise and attention. There is a Toller breeder in Venice, FL. I see Tollers at the dog beach all the time. Beautiful pups.
