Have you ever wondered why bacon and eggs are considered breakfast food? Believe it or not, positioning eggs and bacon as breakfast was the result of a deliberate advertising campaign on behalf of a pork company.

In the 1920s, the Beech-Nut Packing Company, hired Edward Bernays, a public relations and advertising expert, to increase consumer demand for bacon. To do so, Bernays asked his agency’s internal doctor if a heavier breakfast would more beneficial than a lighter one for the American public.

quote:

But because the doctor knew that it was in his best interest to support Bernays suspicion, he confirmed the theory and wrote to 5,000 of his doctors friends asking them to confirm it as well. This ‘research’ of doctors encouraging Americans to eat a heavier breakfast – namely ‘Bacon and Eggs’ – was published in several major newspapers and magazines to great success. Beech-Nut’s profits increased rapidly and we now eat bacon and eggs for breakfast!

I mean, it's just sort of an abridged version of the "Traditional English Breakfast" which seems to have originated sometime around the 13th century.

So if I eat bacon and eggs for supper tonight, can I still call it breakfast supper?

It’s also because bacon is awesome. It’s eaten at every meal.

Well, before the 1920s, most people, at least in North America, ate oatmeal and porridge for breakfast.

For centuries there have been farmers waking up hungry with no food to be found and no way to feed their family

Then they looked outside, saw a pig and several chickens.

That was probably more an issue of economics than nobody conceiving of the idea that bacon and eggs were "breakfast foods."

Something like bacon (yeah, American bacon is kind of unique) and eggs had been thought of as "breakfast foods" for centuries in the English speaking world.

The fact that pork producers were able to encourage ordinary Americans, with greater largesse, to start eating more breakfasts like that, does not mean that they invented the whole notion that they were breakfast foods.

I don’t even know what porridge is. The little rascals ate mush. Is that the same as porridge?

Don't you even Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Not to be confused with Little Miss Muffet's curds and whey.

But it’s much worse than our baked beans. Their beans are canned with tomato sauce.
