Obviously one being in Canada and the other in Montana, are there any major differences or preferences for one over the other. Looking at going in May/June.

Banff was awesome. I've never been to Glacier, but it's on the list of places to see.

Glacier National

Don't give money to the Canadian eco-tourism cause.

I went to both on the same trip. Banff is akin to the US Rockies but much more rugged. Glacier has, well .... glaciers. Hiking a glacier is pretty cool. Assume you can do the same in Banff, but not positive.

Would say both are similar with slight differences.

Either would be awesome.

Banff/Jasper (which is adjacent on the BC side) is bigger and has more actual glaciers. Glacier has Going To The Sun Road, which is one of the world's great scenic drives. If I was backpacking, I'd probably do Glacier. If not, I'd go to Banff, which has a bit more touristy stuff. But you can't go wrong with either. And they're not that far apart, so you could feasibly do both if you had enough time.

Same here. There's arguably more to do in and around Banff. But I personally found the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier to be the most spectacular drive I have ever made. You can also go up to the Canadian side of Glacier (Waterton) and it's spectacular as well.

Banff is busier and has more touristy things. There's literally a downtown area with shopping, etc. Banff also has Lake Louise and Yoho nearby and Jasper not too far away either.

Glacier is a backpacker's paradise. Lots of cool places if you're going there for that purpose. There's still some touristy stuff, but not as much as Banff.

I've been to both twice. They're close enough together that I'd recommend visiting both. Make sure to make your reservations as early as possible. Stuff fills up pretty fast at both places. Do you have to choose one or the other?

Yeah. We may be able to do both if I can get the rental/car and airline stuff to work out with one way pricing cross-border.

Good point. It didn't open until late June/early July last year I believe.

Same here. Banff/Lake Louise is the better choice.

Lakes in Banff are a little more beautiful. They are a bright emerald green( glacial flour). Glacier's lakes are great also, just not as breathtaking. Drive up to Banff from Glacier is worth doing. Stay off interstates and use backroads. Thank me later.

Banff vs. Glacier National Parks by Golfer

Been to both numerous times. My brother lives right outside of Glacier. If you can do both I would, we drove north to Banff from Glacier and flew into Glacier National Park Int'l Airport. Gotta be world's smallest int'l airport, our flight was delayed because of Caribou on the runway.

Maybe because Ive been to Glacier so many more times though its kind of worn on me, but you definitely want to see Banff and the town of Banff. Glacier is a must -do only if the Going-to-the-Sun road is open. Its closed some years year round because of the snow. If it is open then hikes on Logans Pass at the peak of Going-to-the-sun road make the whole trip through the park worth it. The Hidden Lake hike at Logans Pass is a must if it is open. Last year we went and it was closed but the summer before in June the path was still almost 100% covered in snow which is neat being from LA and it was awesome hike with great vistas. Mountain goats came right up to us on the trail too.

You can do a two week trip in the Canadian Rockies between these two and not run out of hikes or things to do though. Enjoy your trip

How much of Glacier do you think is doable and worthwhile with elementary school age kids? Talking like day hikes and not overnight backcountry. They're pretty resilient for a good half day trek. Am I gonna get to see some worthwhile shite, given those strictures?

if you have never been, plenty

plenty of short 2-3 mile hikes to gorgeous waterfalls and whatnot

and just driving the Going to the Sun road is amazing itself
