Has anyone become allergic to poison ivy as they’ve gotten older? I was never in nearly 40 years allergic to poison ivy, I’ve never had a rash even after coming in contact with it. All the times hunting, hiking, trail riding ect, even on work days at the camp id always be the one to get it off our stands bc all the other guys were allergic. Well that all changed Thursday. I now find my arms covered from shoulder to wrist after cutting some trees and bushes around my in laws. House. Crazy how for 40 years I was never allergic and now here we are.

Allergies can definitely change, develop and then go away

Pollen, shellfish, nuts, lactose, etc

That’s what’s weird it doesn’t itch. It just burns.

Take it from a life time guy who can get it by seeing it on TV. Hell, I may get it just from talking in this thread,.

Go get a shot when you see you have it. frick all the other remedies. Just go to the doc and get the steroid shot. Possibly the booster the next day as well

Many allergies have ebbs and flows depending upon exposure.

I was allergic as a kid, then not for 20 years. Then suddenly highly allergic one day.

ETA there a 30 dollar bottle of stuff at Walgreens that helps. Zanfel or zanzel or something.

A friend of mine who wasn't allergic burned some in the back yard and it damn near killed him.

the more times a person is exposed to poison ivy, the more likely they’ll develop a rash. That’s because the rash is your bodies’ immune system responding to what it perceives as a threat. Once your skin recognizes the poison ivy juice, it will trigger a rash again, sometimes within hours.

Basically the more times exposed the more likely you will eventually start reacting to it

I too never had any allergic reaction to poison ivy, and as far as I know, I still don't.

However, it's been a few years since I've been in contact with any, so that may have changed.

When I was a kid my dad and I would go fishing along the Mississippi River and the spot where we'd fish had a bulkhead at the time built into the earthen levee and covered in vines that we'd lean against since it was in the shade. Come to find out, those vines were poison ivy. Never got a single itch out of it.

Adult onset allergy.
I told this story before, I was stung by a wasp last summer and it almost killed me. I've been sting my whole life and it never effected me until now. I'm 45.

My wife has become very allergic to not only poison ivy, but also apparently other plants as well. What sucks is she loves playing flowers, etc and working in the yard in general.
