Absolutley. If you own a franchise of a major food chain, there are plenty of regulations about where you can locate.

That’s part of their contract, not government action. They could sue the company.

This is a company filed with a government regulator who I guess has to approve these things?

GM kinda sucks for approving it.

You can pencil that in on that growing list.

Right under "taking a damn good engine that is reliable and ruining it" with the multiple bullet points of examples.

They make all their money off of the service sector from people who insist on taking their cars/trucks to the stealership.

Their finance department holds APR points on people who insist on financing through the stealership. The same people buy inflated warranties, and get completely ripped off.

Article is behind a paywall and screw TP / NOLA.com

Who is Benson complaining to.....GM or the parish? And does her complaint have any legitimate reasoning?

I'm sure there's some exclusivity guarantees within a certain radius as part of their GM contract, but since the new Bowers location will actually be further away from Best Chevy, then I don't know how that argument would hold any water.

And unless the parish has to rezone the property to be used as a dealership, I don't see what grounds she'd have to complain there. But given the location of that property, I'd imagine its already got the zoning that Bowers would need.

So Best Chevrolet is mad because Bowers wants to move his dealership over a full mile further away from their dealership than they currently are? And they claim they advertise as "the chevrolet dealership on veterans" but I have never heard it advertised as that so their "marketing" complaint is moot.

And Benson is mad because it will give competition to her dealership yet hers is a luxury brand so it's not direct competition.

And Banner Chevrolet is mad because they've been asking GM to move for years but never had the property to do it and Bowers has owned this land for a long time and finally wants to use it?

My wife fits this description. I should take my car into the Bowers because my oil change is $20 cheaper than when we bring it to the mechanic. Hey, Bowers says we need these $600+ worth of additional services, should we get them.

She doesn't get that the $20 savings is because the oil change is a loss leader so they can take an entire day to do an oil change "knowing" they will overcharge you for every little thing their computer tells them to sell you.

So I guess Bowers finally said uncle to the lease holders and is paying them to leave.

Now consider buying from Ford. You walk in, give your name, test drive a truck or two. Ford offers you three options. You don't like them and decide to try another dealer, maybe go to Baton Rouge.

Your name is already in the CRM and they have a copy of the same three offers, pick whatever one you want. Same offers. Same thing if you're not happy with the service and repairs.

I'm not certain this is correct. It's my understanding that Ford still operates through independent franchise dealers. Each dealer sets their own final pricing, and dealers purchase inventory at wholesale from the manufacturer - the price you pay is negotiated at the dealership level, not set by Ford.

Now Ford EV requires dealers to sell at a fixed, no haggle prices.

Who do you complain to, a local chain or a faceless regional manager in Detroit?

This trope of bullshite has been brought to you by State Farm and your local agent. Having seen a GM on TV commercials guarantees you excellent service! Just ask Price LeBlanc, or Gerry Lane customers!

Are you dumb? Go on Ford dot com right now, and search for an F-250 within 100 miles of Houston. There are hundreds of options, and yes, even if you live in Bumfrick Louisiana, you can expand the range to 500 miles, and the lending dealer will have some dipshit drive your chosen vehicle to your closest stealership for you to pick it up tomorrow.

Don't they sell completely different types of vehicles to completely different markets? This is stupid.

Ordinarily I would be pulling for Benson over Bowers but I don’t see what her grounds are. She doesn’t have a monopoly. How can she object just because she doesn’t like the competition?

ETA
Okay. Now I see what her grounds are. The state statute that protects territory.

The complaint is to the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Cimmission

quote:

Under state law, dealerships can challenge a new dealership if it is within 5 miles of their locations. Best Chevrolet’s location, at 2600 Veterans Blvd. in Kenner, is 4.8 miles from Bowers’ proposed new site. “This prime location would position MBC Metairie to intercept customers who currently patronize Best Chevrolet for sales and service,” Moisant wrote.

quote:

Moisant, in his objection, challenged the move on a couple of grounds. He argued that by helping a rival dealer move into Best Chevrolet’s established market territory, GM is favoring one franchisee over another and giving Bowers increased access to customers in the affluent 70002 and 70005 ZIP codes. Moisant also argued that having two Chevrolet dealerships on the same road would result in market confusion.

Dealerships need to collapse

I’ve been hearing that dealerships are collapsing since 2020. And yet my local small town dealer is loaded up with fresh 2500s and 4wheel drive Yukon’s

Same - I've swapped to internet purchases. Mostly out of Texas and pay to get them shipped. The price has been the same eitherway; more options out of Texas.

Bowers and Ross Downing are terrible. Worse customer service I've ever had at Downing, and Bowers isnt far from it.

I wish we could just order a car online direct from the manufacture for all automakers.

Isn't Banner that one in the East om the corner of Chef and Downman?
Talk about shite locations.
My parents bought a car from Benson Chevy before and I bought one from Bryan Chevy. But both have changed names or owners since.

I miss the days seeing salesmen sweat outside while smoking cigarette after cigarette

Circa roughly 2009, I went to buy a car at a dealership in Gonzales and the salesman lit a cigarette in the new truck in the passenger seat. Door open, but still, he was sitting in the new car and lit a cigarette.

I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, but honestly, that pales in comparison to just how stupid that was.

Weird, most dealerships in cities are all on the same road together anyway.

Here in Greensboro, you have every major dealership within two miles of each other on Wendover Ave.
