Former employees of Best Buy’s in-house tech support and repair team Geek Squad say there were mass layoffs this week, 404 Media reports. A former Geek Squad agent tells the outlet that they received an email on Tuesday about a work from home event the following day regarding a “company change.”
“Our leadership gave individual calls stating we were being let go for the simple fact that the company couldn’t afford to pay us, more or less. It was extremely short notice and devastating,” an ex-Geek Squad worker told 404 Media.

That “rightsizing” also includes the physical space in stores, where she confirmed Best Buy “will be removing physical media and updating our mobile digital imaging, computing, tablets, and smart home departments.”
Numerous former and current Geek Squad employees on Reddit over the years noted the high turnover rate associated with the job due to its relatively low pay and slim prospects of promotion. Based on 231 salaries, Glassdoor estimated a pay range of $16-$21 per hour for a Geek Squad agent. This estimate appears to be accurate based on the listed open roles on Best Buy’s website. For example, there’s currently an active listing for a “Geek Squad City Supervisor” in Brooks, Kentucky, with an hourly pay range of $20-$30 per hour. An opening for an entry-level Geek Squad agent at a store in Encinitas, California, has an hourly pay range of $15-$19 per hour.

Now they can move to Cali and get $20/hr and be a McGeek flipping burgers right

Best Buy can go the way of Circuit City as far as I’m concerned. Last (and final) purchase I made there was a chest freezer that was on sale. I got to the store to pick it up, already paid online, and that process took over thirty minutes.

I’m not sure what the purpose of Best Buy is. Way more options and better pricing online. I haven’t stepped in one in years. I can’t imagine their business model is sustainable.

I’m surprised this story got out without anybody to fix the printer.

The same Geek Squad that surreptitiously installed spyware on the computers of political activists on behalf of the NSA?

I saw one of their vans last weekend. I remember committing to my wife that I thought they had done away with the Geek Squad long ago. I can’t remember the last time I’d noticed seeing them.

So you are cool with this company going out of business and all of their employees being out of work because they inconvenienced you for 30 minutes.

I get it, but the whole idea of doing the transaction the way I did was to save time. It was very difficult to get anyone in the store to wait on me (I got passed off to different employees twice), not to mention actually getting the freezer from the back of the store into my truck was a far over complicated process.

I mean, this is how layoffs usually work.
Why do these companies continue to stay open well past the point it’s evident their business mode is going the way of blockbuster? Is it so the people at the top can milk everything they can out of the distributors and creditors?

Yes, and I could say the same about several other businesses. Look at what we’ve come to accept from customer service in this country. Those companies are actively looking for ways to put employees out of work anyway, as evidenced by this thread.

Can you detail the process for us?

Thats still mind blowing.
Our policy is to trap people in menial work.

More like the "odd squad" lately. All of the actual geeks moved on to more productive and better paying jobs. Either BB makes some changes in its management or shut them all down.
