Short drive
None that are worth driving to.
Now if you had a boat...

The water clarity is pretty horrible all along the LA coastline. You'd do better just to drive to Alabama or Florida.

Rigs off Alabama can be a toss up, Pensecola or Navarre is about the closest dive you can get decent viz without taking an overnight to the flower gardens or a long trip to a rig. Honestly, I don't do much diving around Louisiana. It's crap.

The best would likely be fresh water springs in some places.

Wrong. Once you get below thirty feet it is clear as day.

Yeah that was my concern, the viz, cause I've seen some great footage from a buddy who did some rig spear fishing this past summer out of Pensacola and was hoping I wouldn't need to drive out there for somesolid diving. It's not too bad of a drive though

Go and dive the Flower Garden Banks.

I'm not usually a fan of deep dives but the Oriskany off Alabama is pretty cool.

Last time I went had a 8-10 foot bull shark swim up behind me. Someone got it on video too.

If you are going to drive, go to Panama City Beach. The jetties are a cheap dive, but there are many sites to dive at. A short boat ride will get you to several dive sites. If you have a friend that goes out to the rigs south of LA, AND HAS A BOAT, you're in business.

Why would you say that? You must just swim from the beach? YOu would be surprised what happens after you go under the thermocline.

There are way more factors at play here. The water may clear up but you need a sunny day to get ample light down at depth. Currents can be strong and inconsistent at different levels.
In my opinion, rig diving is not something I would recommend to an infrequent diver looking to go out on a short sightseeing trip.

Call Harry's Dive Shop on Airline. They usually have some trips planned. Platforms out of Grande Isle locally and sometimes as far away as the Pacific. Been a long time since I've been diving but I know his daughter is still there 'cause I popped in a few weeks ago.

I've always wanted to do that. Need to learn to scuba dive though.
