Big cats can no longer be kept as pets.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate just passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 263, Senate companion bill S. 1210) by unanimous consent. This follows the bill’s passage by the U.S. House of Representatives on July 29. The legislation prohibits keeping tigers, lions and other big cat species as pets, and bans public contact with these species, including paid interactive experiences like cub petting.

There are untold numbers of captive tigers, lions, leopards and other big cats in the U.S., most living in shoddy roadside zoos, private menageries or in homes as pets. The presence of these cats in our communities is often the consequence of predatory businesses that operate substandard facilities and charge the public for photo ops and for feeding and petting sessions with infant tigers and other big cats. Bred specifically to turn a profit, cubs are torn from their mothers at birth and subjected to neglect and mistreatment as props for these public encounters. This exploitation occurs for a few months until the animals have grown too large to be handled. They are then warehoused in roadside zoos, sold into the pet trade, and some are killed. Meanwhile, in a never-ending cycle, new cubs have been produced, used and disposed of, increasing the number of captive big cats in backyards and basements across America.
So no more Mike the Tiger?

Reads like it applies to private enterprises.
Could be wrong, but I believe LSU takes tigers that are in some form of distress/in need of rescuing.
I don't profess to know all the legal drivel, but this doesn't seem targeted at the type of operation LSU is running.

IIRC, if it weren't for private ownership the species would be even more endangered.

dont go assuming anything, mike is a mascot. by law thats described as entertainment animal and as such, mascots could be very easily included to fall under this statute.
i can see a lawsuit coming up over it and some point, the peta zellots will see to it

Pit Bull terriers nationwide enjoy the news.

One of the luckiest and best taken care of big cats in the country, if not the world. No one cares what the Washington elites vote on, much less big cats.

The law literally has an exception for “state colleges and universities.”

I don’t Think so. Believe they get cubs from other legit organizations like accredited zoos. Not Tiger King. The cubs are (supposed) to be in good health upon arrival. Inasmuch as Mike is cared for by LSUSVM and lives in a multimillion dollar enclosure, I doubt LSU is subject to this law.

Don’t bother.

Unless something has changed, this is not the case.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has regulations that prevent member institutions (read: accredited zoos) from transferring endangered species to other facilities that are not accredited participants in the AZA species survival plan.

Might be bad news for Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete.

You’re probably correct. I was going off of something I thought I’d heard a while back. Not really credible.
I knew he was under the care of the vet school, and the enclosure is obviously nicer than anything most of us will ever call home.

I think at least the last 2 were “rescue” cats from sanctuaries.
I’m pretty sure Roscoe was.
Eta roscoe did come from a sanctuary but he was raised there.

My old man’s cousin had a couple of bobcats as pets. They were fricking awesome.
