Billy Brown (Alaska Bush People) passes away

“Our beloved patriarch Billy Brown passed away last night after suffering from a seizure,” the TV personality wrote on Instagram. “He was our best friend — a wonderful and loving dad, granddad and husband and he will be dearly missed. He lived his life on his terms, off the grid and off the land and taught us to live like that as well. We plan to honor his legacy going forward, and to continue with his dream. We ask for privacy and prayers during this painful time! God bless everyone!!!”

Strange request for people on a reality tv show.

He was a strange cat. I don't even think they were living in Alaska.

Hate it that his kids lost their dad, but that is one fricked up family.

They had to go to jail for a minute for taking money resident's get paid for living there when they were proven to be living elsewhere.

Did Snowbird get her tooth fixed? She could spook a stick horse but had a nice rack and could shoot pretty good.

Correct. That's what got them in trouble:
quote:
Back in October 2014, Billy, his wife and four of their seven children were charged with a total of 60 counts of first-degree unsworn falsification and first-and-second-degree theft. According to reports, the family lied on Permanent Fund dividend applications between 2011 and 2013, to receive yearly oil revenue checks given to Alaskan residents.
Unfortunately, it turned out the family was not technically living in Alaska and therefore didn't qualify for the funds.
Both Billy and Joshua pled guilty to the charges and were sentenced to 30 days in jail in 2016. The duo was also required to complete 40 hours of community service, and because of their guilty plea, the charges against the rest of the family were dropped.

They weren't. Even when filming they didn't live on the land they were building on and supposedly owned in Alaska. They lived in town, often times at a resort, and only came out to the "homestead" on filming days. They didn't own the land, as they claimed. The guy who did own the land said he had leased it to Discovery Channel, not the Browns.
They also got in trouble with the law for taking the pipeline payments despite not living in Alaska for the designated amount of time. They spent the majority of their time living in Texas, I believe. They forged documents saying they did, and the whole family was in on it. Only a couple of them did time for it, though.

I believe one of those guys on Life Below Zero went to jail for the same thing. Collecting on the Permanent Fund.

I think when they were convicted they were living in Alaska but exceeded the amount of allowable time they could be out of Alaska.
I know my first year I missed being eligible by 3 days (because I left town a few days early when my father passed). I believe it was $1600 that year. Was tempting, but I was honest about it and didn't submit for it.

It is also pretty common knowledge that anyone living near them pretty much hated them. The show spun it as people "not liking outsiders", but the shite they and the film crews did rubbed a whole bunch of folks the wrong way.

Didn’t realize the youngest daughter turned 18.

I always figured most everything they did was staged.

They, through Billy, had to finally come out and admit that what they were doing was "Recreating how the family lived early on when their kids were much younger." They weren't really living that way at all.
