I used to play while in college. It was an every Tuesday night thing.
We were poor college kids so we kept it friendly. Only was allowed to have $4 at the table..nickel ante and quarter bourre. That way no one left in a bind or mad.
Love the game personally!

Used to play it during the holidays with the family, before everyone started hating each other. Grandma would clean us all out.

Working in Jacksonville at a dealership, the controller was from South Carolina. We started talking about gambling and his wife would get made at him because he was teaching his sons how to play Bourre. Until that point, I had never heard of Bourre outside of Louisiana. Caught me off guard.

What about Pedro? I've never really understood the rules.
Anyone have a quick cliff notes explanation?

Dealt 9 cards.
Bid how many points you think you can make with the 9 cards in your hand between you and your partner. Whoever wins the bid calls the suit, You throw away all your off cards and the dealer will give you enough cards to make a hand of 6. You do not have to throw cards away, you can keep all off cards if you think it will help your partner. Dealer gets to look through and keep all remaining cards in the deck.
Point cards are A-J-10-2 Ace and 2 make themselves and are worth 1 point each as well as the jack and 10. Other point cards are the 5s of the same color as trump. The 5 of trump , trumps the other 5 of the same color.

By playing. It's easy once you understand 4 simple rules
You always follow suit.
If you don't have suit you must play trump.
If you have a sure 3 trick winner you must play in order from high to low.

Yep, better play sure winners or your matching the pot as well. Fun game. Like others said, can win or lose a lot if not careful

It's basically like playing spades, but any suit can be the trump card...

started playing bouree as a kid, learned to play for real hanging out at the Cigar Merchant in Lafayette.
we used to go to City Bar in Maurice and play cards on Saturday mornings, that is where the real professionals would play. Most of the old Cajuns I played with at City Bar are dead now. Great people, and they would talk shite about me in French around the table. I never let on that I understood what they were saying. We also used to play a game called "Yook" that was basically euchre.
I dont like playing with people that dont know what they are doing.

Dang, haven't played bourre' in at least 3 decades. Played it in the '70s and early '80s. Forgot about some of it until I caught on to page 2.

I completely understand this statement. I grew up "knowing" how to play bouree since i was very young. However, not until you begin to play regularly with some old men, some 70+, that you really begin to learn the game. And those lessons didn't come cheap some nights...

there are some strategy and card play sequencing lessons that don't come cheap.

Is it more popular in south Louisiana?
I've always thought that was the only place where it is popular at all. Most people outside of Louisiana have never heard of it.
