I was about 10 at the time, but I remember for days southeast BR was being terrorized by a ski-mask rapist in areas like Hickory Ridge, Shenandoah, etc. Did he ever get caught? Anyone remember how it all turned out? I haven't been able to find anything on the internet.

I remember something similar in the early 80s and was probably around 7 or 8.

Editing to add an old story.

There were stories of a serial rapist called "Serpent Man" because of the snake tat on one arm. It turned out to be a hoax started by the woman who first "reported" it.

If this is the same guy, he was caught:

quote:

BATON ROUGE, La., Dec. 1— John B. Simonis, 30 years old, of Lake Charles, La., was indicted Monday night on seven counts of rape and burglary for a June 7 attack on a suburban Baton Rouge woman and her family.

The police said today that Mr. Simonis was suspected of being the ski-mask rapist who may have attacked more than 100 women in 10 states.

Two other Lake Charles men, John Glass Dickinson 3d, and Frederick A. Boerman Jr., both 26, were also indicted for the June 7 attack. Undercover agents posed as moviegoers, shoppers and pinball players in tailing Mr. Simonis, the police said.

Ski Mask Rapist

Heres another article stating he confessed to over 77 other crimes:

quote:

JENA, La., Dec. 3— A man suspected of being Louisiana's skimask rapist has confessed at least 77 crimes in 12 states, possibly including a sexual attack in Texas for which another man was convicted, the police said today.

Jon B. Simonis, 30 years old, of Lake Charles, was arrested last weekend with two suspected accomplices and brought to the La Salle Parish jail here.

He quickly pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery at a Jena home, one count of burglary and one of unauthorized use of a vehicle and was sentenced Wednesday to 231 years in prison.

The police in Baton Rouge said that Mr. Simonis had also told of his involvement in other crimes. They said he had indicated that he was involved in an attack in Bridge City, Tex., for which Clarence Williams, 42, was convicted. Mr. Williams was sentenced to 50 years in prison in October for the April 30, 1979, sexual attack on a 40-year-old Bridge City woman and her teen-age son and daughter.

Admits to more crimes

It's funny I remembered the serpent story as well but was very young and thought maybe I was just not remembering it correctly but I do remember being told it was a fake story. Maybe trying to piggyback off the real serial rapist that I linked above?

John Simonis broke into my friends home in Hickory Ridge (Stumberg) and unlocked a window. Then he came back a few days later and raped her (maybe 14/15 years old) in front of the parents (who were tied up). He may have also raped the younger sister-I'm not sure. My friend who was raped was very open about it and seemed determined not to let it ruin her life. We talked really frankly about it when she was only 15 and I always REALLY admired her for being so strong. I think about her all the time and see her little sister around town.

quote:

I gained an insight into such a mind when I interviewed Jon Simonis, who is serving 2,527 years in Louisiana State Penitentiary for more than 100 rapes and abductions.

The man known as the Ski Mask Rapist told me how he would coldly and calmly stalk his victims, sometimes for weeks, before executing his depraved rape and sadistic torture techniques.

“I stalked my victims like a hunter stalks deer. It sometimes took weeks to hone my target,” he said.

For him it was easy to separate the sex crimes from the planning. The rape was a pay-off for the organisation and the precision of the preparation.

“It was just me in another life,” he told me, in his prison cell, shackled by the feet, with a company of armed prison officers standing by.

Sexual predators have patterns of behaviour that can help build profiles of crimes and perpetrators.

Like us all, sex offenders are creatures of habit. Asked what drove him to commit these crimes, he said: “Some people are into sports. I was into excitement and adrenalin. Crime was my drug of choice. I could have done the same thing if I was into racing cars or climbing mountains.

“Crime had so much more to offer in terms of the different excitement.

“I have remorse for my victims but at the time you don’t care too much about the consequences or the victims.”

Simonis, 59, was jailed in 1981 for crimes committed over a three-year period. He will die in prison.

He is on CCR lock down at Angola. I used to work up there back in the 90's and some of his victims came to visit him. He is one weird mofo.
