Posted on the OB but it's dead today. Anyone ever bought a utility trailer out of state? Looking at a 6x10 trailer in MIss. Does anyone know you have to pay taxes, and how to have it registered?

Small trailers (under 5,000 lbs. GVW) in Mississippi are not required to have titles affixed to them. You need to check with the seller to see what they are willing to do for you as a Louisiana resident. If they are like the usual Mississippi resident, they will have the wrong solution or suggestion.

Good luck, just pay the sales tax there and take the evidence to your local DMV when you register it in LA. It's not going to be much money difference.

Take Bill of sale to a title place and they do it all.

It's not much at all.
I bought a, trailer from Arkansas and one in Texas.

Now boats, boats are the pain to transfer.

Are you buying it from an individual or a business? If you buy it from some rando off of craigslist, then they shouldn't be charging sales tax, but if they don't have a title, you may have trouble registering with the state. If you are buying it from someplace like Home Depot, you're going to end up paying sales tax in both MS and LA.

Hey Nap!

For folks' education on the boat process-
Boats in Mississippi don't have a title from the State either, only a registration. The local County Tax Assessor from the County in MS will provide to the MS seller a letter attesting to this fact to be brought to a LA purchaser's authority to enable the person to get a title to the boat hull.

I found it on Craigslist. Looks like some local Gulfport builder/dealer. I thought it may be like a atv or motorcycle where you pay taxes later not at time of sale.

Negative there, if a MS merchant collects sales tax on it and you can prove to them at the time of purchase that you are a Louisiana resident, the MS merchant is legally obliged to forward the tax to LA.

It's true with automobiles as well.

I bought a 5x8 trailer at Lowes in MS. After I paid I asked for the title. Lowes person was like
Lowes manager was called and found a folder with the titles. She pulled out a random trailer title and handed it to me. I told her the serial # on the title had to match the trailer I bought. It took a while but I did leave with the correct title.
