Can you manually open an electric gate when power goes out?

Power just went out here in Houston and I live in one of those gated townhome lots. Want to get the hell out and stay elsewhere but my car is stuck because the gate is obviously not going to open. Can someone give me pointers?

Unhook the cotter pin that connects the arm to the gate.
Edit: if it's a swing arm style.

I’ve seen one guy run over one before. So yeah, you don’t have to die there if you don’t want to.

It is a sliding gate, sorry should have said that.

The walls we build to keep out others can become our own prisons.

Are you personal friends with the Rock? He can open it for you.

It can be opened manually. Usually with a hand crank.
It should have a battery backup.

The gate should open on power failure. Must be broken. Run over it.

Normally the property management would have someone come open it immediately after power outage.
And 100% able to be opened manually as fail-safe.
But I wouldn't want to meddle with their shite in case you break some shite. I'd Look for emergency manual release instructions on the motor housing or nearby. Then get a neighbor to do it and take the fall if it breaks.

Just do what The Rock did when his gate wouldn’t open due to a power failure

If it's chain operated, just find out how to detach the chain from the gate. Once it's detached, the gate is no longer connected to the braking mechanism in the motor cabinet and you should be able to push it open.
I am not responsible for you destroying your apartment complex's gate.
Also, don't those things typically fail open for the exact reason you said: not turning tenants into prisoners?

If it's like mine you can push it open, it won't be easy so it might take two people but it will open. The chain rolls between rubber wheels on the motor, the wheels won't turn so your forcing the chain across the wheels.

Should be on 12 volt battery power

Our gate automatically opens when the power goes out. All gates should do this for safety reasons. But yes....it can be manually opened. You need a key to the opener box to do it.
