A family member of mine has to go and do pre-employment testing for a service tech position with Caterpillar. Has anyone gone through this? We were wondering what type of testing and questions it will be.
TIA
TIA

Not sure, he is having to go to Reserve for the testing, he would be working out of the Hammond location.

Is there not an actual mechanical test?

I worked for LA Machinery (CAT) right after I got out of the navy. I remember having to take one of those personality assessment type things on a computer and they had a mechanical test. The mech test was a bunch of parts (a valve maybe?) and the exploded view diagram of the valve. You used the diagram to assemble the valve.
Apparently the testing contributes to your starting pay. I started out making more than some guys who had been there for a few years.
I didn't work on the machinery side though. I was doing the offshore engine work out of Morgan City.
ETA - this was in 2007

Each region has a different name that runs all the CAT stuff in that state.
LA is Louisiana Machinery, MS is Puckett Machinery, etc

Possibly... but I spent most of my time out in the field. Mostly in Port "FML" Fourchon.

That is Louisiana Cat.
There will be a Diesel Filter or pump he will have to put together. Alphabetize skills on a computer program. Personality test. Basic Mechanical skills on a computer test.

There's a poster here who works in HR for them. Maybe they will answer.

its common sense stuff to show you are not a moron, can read and understand instructions without googling everything (not a given in todays world), get a visual idea of how you look and personal hygiene, get a read on if you are a mature adult or not, and check if you have your own transportation and a clean driving record and you pass drug screening

Does he have any experience and can he pass a drug test?

Yes he can pass a drug test and he has some experience and has recently graduated from diesel tech school.

Will probably get hired. Equipment companies always need techs

Disclaimer: I’ve worked for Caterpillar for over 20 years.
Your relative is taking a basic mechinal Text to see what their mechicial apptitue is. Basically the Cat dealer (that’s who he will a thallus work for, not Caterpullar) is wanting to access if he can be trained as a mechanic. They might want him to work on engines, or transmissions. Or mayble rebuild pumps or cylinders. Or maybe to be a PM tech. Either way, the purpose of the test is to (1) determine if he can be trained and (2) see where he will fit best.
As for the nature of he training, that depends on which dealer he’s trying to go to work for. Where is he taking this test?
