Catholic School vs Montessori vs Public

I went to Catholic school from Pre-K until college and I am of the opinion the quality of education is far superior to a public school. However lately I've been noticing more and more friends send their kids to these Montessori schools. I've read up a little on it and it seems like complete BS. Does anyone have any first hand experiences with these schools?
I ask because my children are almost school aged and I'm beginning to look at potential opportunities.

Montessori schools are a bunch of new age hippies teaching kids that pooping in the corner is art.

It's like wholistic vs modern medicine.
That's how I've had it explained.

Montesorri daycare/pre-school/ summer camp is not a bad idea bc it teaches kids through exploration. It is a great idea for a summer camp, but not as a basis for overall education of a student. At some point, you have to teach kids the basic facts to be able to explore later.
I teach in catholic schools for the local school board- Private schools are still very old school in approach, but you do not have near as many problems that the public schools have. Also, there is not as much emphasis on testing, but that is slowly creeping in.

Montessori has researched and studied methods that do work. They've stayed with the same method since their cataloged, evidence based method was put forth.. The problem isn't with the method but the lack of extra curricular activities, especially sports.. My kids go the catholic route

This was my experience, personally, but I also went to a high school that broke away from EBR and had decent academics.
And one of the Catholic schools I went to was probably not the best around (Redemptorist).
There are some really great private schools that blow public out of the water. But there are also smaller ones that are a joke. I don't know how it is now, but growing up, private schools did not require teaching degrees or anything like that.

How old are your kids?
From what I understand, it's best to start kids early (like age 2-3 if possible) in Montessori programs. IMO,it's not for everybody, but it can give a solid base for future scholars.
Also, many private schools start the application process in the fall of the year preceding the enrollment year. (So if you're looking at pre-K for next year, you may be SOL.) If you go the Catholic school route, keep in mind that not all schools have pre-K programs that automatically feed into their Kindergarten classes--you may have to reapply for K.

Montessori actually teaches a lot of independent thought and self direction however any school can say they teach in a Montessori way. There are required credentials for those schools that truly want to be identified and credentialed as Montessori.

For daycare/ preschool Motesori seems legit. I wouldn't put my kids in it past kindergarten however.

The biggest selling point for Montessori schooling is that they will teach your kids how to pour water from a jug. My kids didn't go to Montessori school and to this day, they struggle with pouring water from a jug. Very frustrating.

I had never heard of Montessori before this thread.
Am I not alone or simply ignorant?
