Cedar T&G Porch Ceiling Finish

I posted this in the Home/Garden board and got no takers so thought that I’d try here.
We have decided to install cedar T&G on the porch ceilings (~ 1,300 sf) of our new build in St. Augustine. The home is very far inland and therefore saltwater exposure not a concern. Any suggestions for method/materials for finishing? Natural color preservation and minimizing maintenance are obvious goals.
If you’ve got pictures please share! Thanks.

There are a lot of ways to do it. You could leave it natural and let it change colors over time. It’s cedar so I don’t think you have to seal it. Once it’s up I would let it stay like that so you get used to it then figure it out.
Keep any scrap pieces and finish them different ways.
If you want a gloss finish I’ve had good luck with Man O War it’s a spar urethane which is meant for outdoors. Do not use poly as it will peel overtime

i installed a cedar ceiling and used benjamin moore's arborcote. it's a 2 in one stain and sealer and comes in a ton of colors and can be mixed if you don't like the standard colors. 4 years in and still looks great, no reason to think i'll ever have to recoat.

We built this house when we lived in Montgomery. I added the enclosed porch and used cypress T&G on the ceiling. It is shown in picture 13. I used no stain and helmsman spar urethane in satin finish. Beautiful ceiling.

I did tongue and groove on my patio ceiling when I had a house in Palm Beach county. Not near the ocean but it did have a swimming pool. I installed it myself with the help of one of my sons. No problems and fairly easy job. I used nails and put quarter round at the ends.

Thanks! Cypress is also an option. I’d love to see the picture but the link isn’t working for me for some reason.

Upside down T-111 looks great, much cheaper, easier, and quicker.
I did my vaulted ODK ceiling 8 years ago and still looks great. Stained with a roller.

You don't have to finish cedar. It has a natural defense against the elements, and does really well under a porch like your application, not graying with age much at all (especially if it doesn't get hours and hours of direct sunlight a day and is in the dry).
Remember, once you finish something, anything, you will be refinishing it the rest of your/its life. I've lived in and maintained homes with western red cedar siding for many years. The porches are always the best weathering and looking part, even without a finish.
ETA: If you call it "shiplap" it will increase your home's value by 20%......honestly.
Okay, maybe not.

Thank you! Is that an Isokern fireplace in the addition?

How did you like it? We put a wood burning Isokern in our build and haven’t seen one in person before.

I like them. Far better than the metal fireboxes. Much larger and more durable.
