Commuting from New Orleans to Hammond

I have a potential job opportunity in Hammond but I’d like to continue to live in New Orleans. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with commuting. I know it probably wouldn’t be much fun but I want to balance the positives of the opportunity with the negatives of commuting. Thanks.

I-55 is a ghost town for the most part. You’ll be fine.

You'd be going the opposite way of most people so I'd imagine it wouldn't be too bad.

If you don't mind the drive time, it's not bad going 55. You'll be going against traffic also

Since SS isn't around to do this...

Not the same route but I commute from South BR to the French Quarter. It's really not bad if the job is worth it. Podcasts will make the commute go by quickly

You’ll be fine until you get to Kennah at 5 pm on your way home.
I drive 120 mile round trip from Ponchatoula to Convent 4 days a week. It’s not bad.

I've only had traffic problems there maybe 3 or 4 times in the last year. Waze helps route around anything horrible

I enjoyed my commute from Bay St.Louis to Mandeville more than I enjoy my commute from Covington since buying a house. Although BSL was 15 minutes longer it was all interstate and hardly any traffic unless there was a wreck. I enjoy being in the truck and listening to music/podcasts, if your are similar then NOLA to Hammond won't be bad at all

I drive Hammond to NOLA everyday. I take causeway it takes 50-55 minutes, I have done it for 6 years. It is really not that bad, not worth moving over, if you like living in Nola. Thing that is tough, is being an hour away, so once you are at work there is no leaving and coming back. Makes it tough if you have kids and stuff, in that regard.

1. Rent in downtown Hammond
2. Air bnb your place in Nola
3. ???
4. Profit

driving north you'll hit zero traffic, straight shot as fast as you want (within reason).
coming back:
1) traffic backs up at the curve just past the 55/10 interchange because evidently the drivers of this state cannot navigate it without slowing down to 25 mph
2) traffic backs up between williams and veterans exits where it goes from 4 lanes to 3 then back to 4

This. It doesn't matter what time of year or what time of day, this is a clusterfrick every single time I go to Nola.

Depending on where you live in NOLA and where the job is in Hammond it can take anywhere from 50 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs. You're going against traffic in the morning so that should help. There is traffic coming into the city that backs up starting at Veterans/Power around 3-4pm everyday so that will add to your time coming home. I come into the city from Prairieville everyday and you do get used to it, but by Thursday I'm dragging. Probably not sustainable for the long term. Fuel prices and vehicle maintenance are also a factor obviously.

Started a job in February that has me commuting 200 miles round trip/day. 1.5hrs on the nose. Really isn't bad.

That’s not a bad commute at all.

I'd rather slam by dick in a sliding glass door than do that every day.

If it’s a good job, and if it pays well enough, that is not bad. I’ve had commutes in Houston area, L.A. area and NOVA that are worse.
Just have to weigh the pros and cons yourself.
Also take a little extra time to be aware of weather and traffic conditions, since because of the terrain here there are really only 3 main ways to drive there from NOLA so you can plan accordingly depending on said conditions.
