While sorting through some of my memorabilia (okay, junk!) I came across my registration receipt for my second semester freshman year at LSU (can't seem to find the first semester), dated January 28, 1960. Here's what I had to pay:
General fee: $25.00
Student Activity-Infirmary-Union: $35.00
Room rent: $117.00 (Johnston Hall for entire semester)
Telephone: $10.80
Total fee: $187.80
You didn't buy a meal ticket for eating at Hatcher Cafeteria - paid separately for each meal.
Activity fee got you into all sports events (football, basketball, baseball, etc).
Also found ticket for the 1960 Sugar Bowl game - upper deck north end old Tulane Stadium - $6.00.

That's a little depressing, considering the cost of tuition, etc. now.
Of course, it is really cool to go back through all that stuff - I was sorting through some the other night as well. It was stuff like old report cards and stuff. Turns out I was a really smart kid ... wonder what happened.

Considering I was an out-of-state resident that wasn't the case for me which is why I wasn't able to go to LSU. However, I was making a general reference to how much tuition has spiked everywhere.

In 1984 the cost (minus room and board and food) for a fulltime student(15 hours) was $387.00 per semester.
My Dad bitched and moaned.
I pay more PER CHILD MONTHLY for my kids to go to Elementary School.
The good old days...

It was like that back in my undergraduate days too. Almost everybody had some type of fee exemption - your state senators and reps gave those out to almost anyone who asked. They would also give out cash "scholastic grants" to students of well connected parents - many students made money attending college back in those days. I've seen some of my fraternity brothers have state checks totaling a couple of hundred dollars waiting for them at the registration table.

Had a tuition scholarship in 1967. Lost it due to a "C" in ROTC in my junior year (had to maintain a "B" average and all my other grades were B's, back when a B was not a consolation prize) My tuition went from free to 110....

TOPS doesn't even cover my full tuition.

I've got TOPS plus and extra $800/yr and still paid about $300 this semester
