Cousin chart explained....for anyone that's confused or even cares.

I had a co-worker tell me yesterday that his first cousin's child would be his second cousin and in turn, would be his own child's third cousin. My own mother tried explaining to me when I was a kid that her first cousin was my second cousin and her first cousin's kids were my second, third and so on. To break it down in a simple way:
First Cousin- You both share a grandparent. This should be easy for everyone. Your parent and their parent are siblings.
Second Cousin- You both share a great grandparent(but not the same grandparent). Your second cousin's parent and your parent are first cousins. Which means their grandparent and your grandparent are siblings.
Third Cousin- You both share a great-great grandparent(but not the same great grandparent or grandparent). Your third cousin's parent and your parent are second cousins, which means their grandparent and your grandparent are first cousins. Their great grandparent and your great grandparent are siblings.
So on and so forth.
First Cousin Once Removed- That's your first cousin's child related to you. Not to confuse anyone, but your first cousin's child and your child are second cousins.
First Cousin Twice Removed- That's your first cousin's grandchild related to you.
For subsequent cousins, just replace the above with second cousin, third and so on.

I went to school with a guy for years. One day he was at my parent's home and my Grandmother was there. She asked him if he had a Grandmother by the name of X. It turns out his Grandmother and my Grandmother were first cousins. What does that make me and my school friend?

As I jokingly explained to a Mississippi man its OK to bang your cousin, just don't get her pregnant.
He was happy as shite that I validated his choice.

I don't even try to keep up. Cousins are cousins. And cousins are always off limits.

I call most of my technical "first cousin, once removed " my neice/nephews because growing up most of my first cousins were more like brothers and sisters to me. I have 16 1st cousins on my mom's side and 13 on my dads side.

Lol. I used to think they meant they were removed as in they weren't considered family for a time.
