What idiot would believe that a crocodile is drowning and if it was why would I try to save it?

They’re mimicking drowning humans by sticking their hands in the air

I didn't see anything about whether it works or not.

To be fair I think you can read that sentence a few different ways.

I read this as crocodiles actually pretending to drown humans at first, not crocodiles pretending to be a human drowning

So they took one video where a crocodile has his hands in the air vaguely resembling human hands, and extrapolated that to be some species-wide conspiracy?

saltwater and Nile crocs scare the hell out of me...alligators seem pretty harmless compared to them

"Crocodiles pretend to be drowning. Humans to eat them" sounds more fun

Crocodiles pretending to drown to lure prey
Maybe they're just lonely and want to talk.

There is certainly no other explanation for that 8 second clip of one crocodile.
They've observed humans drowning. They've recognized that other humans will go in to the water to save the person drowning. They've recognized that their claws kind of look like human hands from far away. (Can crocodiles even see their claws to recognize that they resemble human hands?) They've devised this incredible strategy to lure humans into the water to eat them.
Or, one crocodile rolled on its back with its claws above the water.

I'll assure you there's tons of Karens in the US who would storm into the water to "save" the crocodile.
