From a well-to-do Jewish family with showbiz connections. Uncle was Manny Roth, who owned the Cafe Wha? in NYC. Roth watched guys like Hendrix play there when he was a kid.
For all of his over the top rock star stuff, he was actually a geeky looking kid that talked too much. Diagnosed hyperactive. He didn't exactly bleed cool in his youth. He's a textbook example of a nerd completely creating this other person, and then spending the rest of his life playing him.

Wait........he was still around and working?

I saw a show where they said that was a big reason DLR was hired as a singer; he had a bunch of expensive sound equipment that the band could use.

David Lee Roth solo was better than Van Hagar.
No he wasn’t. Sammy Hagar is ten times the singer, plays great guitar, and rocks harder than Roth. I like Dave but if you really sit down and listen to the good stuff Van Jalen made with Sammy there really is no comparison.
They were both great but different.

Saw him in concert in June of 1988 in the Mississippi Coliseum. Rode a giant surfboard across the top of the building. Great entertainer.

Very recently, he was going to have a floor show in Vegas. He was telling people he was going to be the King of Vegas. I’ve got a feeling his voice failed him.

Yeah. His vocals on that Tokyo Dome Live album they put out several years ago were awful. I was shocked that they released it. Nobody lasts forever.

I think he's got some other serious ailments.
Definitely one of the best in his time, though.
Only beef I had with him is that he wanted too many cover songs and didn't allow Eddie to create many original songs. Whereas their many cover songs are indeed quality versions, their original stuff was that much better.

This sounds kind of ominous, I hope he hasn't received some bad news health wise. As a fan of Van Halen from their first album I think Sammy Hagar is the more talented overall but I decidedly liked Van Halen better with Roth. I wish David the best

Your opinion
Mine is DLR wasn't close to Sammy on Sammy's worst days.

The overall music of the band was better - their intros were the best all time...but the quality of the songs clearly dipped once the vocals came in. It wasn't his voice per se. It was like they never could figure out the right way to bring Hagar into the song - like all the momentum the instruments garnered usually just stopped when the singing started.

biggest mistake in music history. DLR and Van Halen split.

David Lee Roth was not a great singer by any stretch but he was one of the greatest front men of all time in the late 70's & all of the 80's. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

He’s incredibly entertaining
He’d be one of the 5 that I’d invite to a dinner with Jesus, Einstein, Lee Harvey Oswald snd jfk being the others.
