I am talking about East Asian oriental folks here - Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean and Japanese (south East Asians excluded - they are too close to the equator and have darker skin). I don't think I've ever seen a sun burned oriental person. Has anybody else noticed this as well?

My dad was Chinese-Indonesian (from Indonesia but of Chinese descent), so I'm not sure if he qualifies to your category or not. Yes, he tanned. My aunts were much fairer than him because they didn't spend as much time outside as he did, but I think they could burn/tan also. They were always careful to wear hats and avoid much exposure to the sun.

"Asia’s obsession with whiteness is a reflection of economic status. Those who had skin burnt by the sun were working in the fields, therefore, the whitening of the skin was a reflection of labor status."

Yes, they most certainly do. Do you know why Asians carry around umbrellas everywhere they go? Because its to block the sun and protect them from tanning. Male Asians (mostly cab drivers) grow out their nails as well. The point of this is to show they don't work outdoors and sweat their asses off for a living.

Everyone with melanin tans. The less melanin you have the less you can tan.

I used to burn a lot when I was younger but I also never wore sunscreen. Now I wear 30 SPF and I'm good.

Now my kids are half Taiwanese, so I guess they are 50% more likely to sunburn???

Eta: my eyes are slanted, so I didn't really read this thread well. Yes, I tan is the response I should have given.
