Do online auction sites use bots?

I'm talking about normal auction houses, not penny auctions and the like.

Normally I don't deal with auctions, but my late aunt's estate went up so I registered and bid on a few things that I liked. I bid early so there were only a handful of bids on other items at the time.

I check back a couple hours later and there are still only a few lots with bids, but each lot I bid on has a higher bid, each from a different "anonymous" bidder. So I'm to believe that separate people registered and bid on only the lots that I bid on in that time?

Something's fricky.

Anyone else experience this?

Maybe the bots really want your aunt’s stuff.

Did your aunt hate you or something to make you bid for her shite?

Yes.

Seller will have bot "autobid" it up to acceptable sales price.

It's your Aunt's family trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible.

There are reserves so maybe bots will bid up till then so that bidders will go higher

They aren't supposed to, and it is actually illegal if they do. It is just like an in-person auction house that uses buy bidders, which is the same as the Ebay shill bidders. That practice isn't just against the rules, but is illegal. They can accomplish the same thing by setting reserve prices, but reserves tend to stifle competitive bidding. So, some auction houses use buy bidders in the crowd to bump the bidding up and get the price where the house needed it. My Pops and uncle used to love finding the buy bidder and dropping stuff on them, or right back on the house.

The reputation that comes with using buy bidders usually gets around the auction buying crowd pretty quickly. Most of those auction houses won't last.

Why are you bidding on your Aunt's stuff? Why don't you tell her you want some of her shite?

I use a sniper bot to swoop a bid if it’s something I want. You put in your max bid and it will auto bid a second before the auction ends
