Do Shopping Cart Wheel Locks Really Work?

I see this sign at my local grocery all the time, but when I look at the wheels on the carts they all look like some 10 year old Chinese kid put them on with a plastic wrench.
I see no way possible for these basic carts to have a hidden antenna system that relays signals telling the wheels to lock. I think stores are full of shite.
OT Grocery managers...prove me wrong.
Also...for the record I've never seen a painted yellow line with shopping cart symbols on at the back of the parking lot.

I know for a fact the ones at Home Goods in Harahan work.
They won't let you walk out of the store with a cart. First hand experience the cart jammed me in the nutsack when the wheels locked up

All homeless people must be mechanical engineers and able to disable this with how many carts they steal.

This is where I’ve experienced it. It comes to a dead stop if you get near the perimeter.

I've never heard of such a thing.

I used to be skeptical. Not anymore.
Went to HEB over the weekend. I parked pretty far out in the parking lot. Walking out with my groceries, that thing locked up a little ways before I got to my car. I took all my bags out of the cart and made one trip the rest of the way to my car.
Had to leave the cart right there.
You would think they would have it set up where people could actually get their grocieries all the way to their car. I imagine anyone who saw me do that thought I was a jerk for not using the cart return corral. Oh well.

There has been a problem in with my neighborhood Winn Dixie and their carts being brought to a adjacent apartment complex and then left on a neutral ground, people have been complaining. The Winn Dixie has since bought all new locking carts. One neighbor explained it to us this way-
If the carts have locking wheels on front it’s one of two companies. GateKeeper or Cartronics. The systems use a series of buried lines in the ground. When the cart comes within 2 feet or so the signal is sent to the wheel and it locks. GateKeeper uses a magnetic lock inside the wheel and Cartronics uses a barrier that drops over the wheel.
You can bypass the system is lifting the cart at least 6”-1 foot off the ground, carry over the line and the wheel won’t lock. Also depending on which system batteries would have to be replaced and not all stores to it.

I would back my truck up to the cart and throw the whole damn thing in there and drive off.

I don't know, but they need to hire someone to start putting DW 40 on the wheels.

The ones at Kroger in Dallas for sure work. It’s embarassing to grab one and it’s locked. Right into the stomach.

You’d think you of all people would know it’s WD.
