Lately it seems like almost any time we let the Milk get within a day or two of the date that crap has already gone sour.

When I was younger and even until pretty recently you could almost always count on it lasting almost a week after the date on the carton.

Can't seem to get anything worth a shite anymore.

You have to put it in the refrigerator.

I think its getting hot between the truck and shelf. Allows the bacteria to start growing and greatly shortens the lifespan.

When we ordered pickup it always did this likely because it was sitting unrefrigerated

Seems like date doesn’t matter. More so about how many days since you opened it.

I don't drink much milk and buy by the half gallon. And I do agree w you, actually. At least from my experience. I've gone to Fairlife whole to avoid it. Fairlife lasts much much longer.

Don’t put it in the door. Keep it in the back of the fridge.

I've had problems with half-and-half from Publix. Every now and then it just wouldn't taste right, sometimes it would be down right bad, not sour......just off. It would mess up any coffee you put it in. I figured out that if you shake the hell out of it for a bit that it is better. It must separate in shipping/storage. I've never had that issue with any other brand or store brand from somewhere else.

I’ve started keeping 2 half gallons in the fridge. They’re usually from different stores purchased on different days. When the older one turns bad, I open the newer one. The milk from a couple of stores seems to last longer and WalMart seems to be the worst. It might have to do with the design of their bottle. It catches milk near the spout when you pour it and then that bit of milk goes bad but it’s what you smell most when you give the milk the sniff test.

I miss Klienpeter’s home delivery service.

Waking up to chocolate milk on the front porch is a solid memory.

It was worse, at least for us, during the Covid shite. All of their dairy was closer to the expiration date than was normal. I think the stuff just sat for longer before being sold, and maybe not stored quite as well. Every now and then I still have the issue with the half-and-half, but after a good shake it tastes normal.

It's the air you let into the container when you break the seal. Especially with UHP (ultra high pasteurization), there may be a date on it six weeks away, but if you open it tomorrow, you've probably got about ten days. I bought 1/2 gallon cartons over gallons for years because of that. Also, the cardboard keeps out light, which plastic jugs not covered in marketing hype try to do.

If you buy two cartons of UHP, both with a date of Sep 1, for instance, the one you open today will go bad (with daily use) in a bit over a week. The unopened one will be good for weeks.
