Expiration date on bottle is 11/11. Safe to pop a few?

ya i've had the same bottle in my car for like 4 years and they are still working fine

You will expire if you take it past the expiration date. It's a gamble.

Take the whole bottle and call us in the morning.

Still safe but may not work as well.

I have always heard they just get less potent as time goes on, but never truly "expire". Not sure if that is the same with all drugs though.

They have a very long date. That's actually meant to represent 3011.

If pills smell different or are crumbling then they are "expired".
Efficacy may be an issue.
I'd still buy some new ones, but if I had a headache and they look and smell fine I take a couple.

Ibuprofen is the shite, why do people take Tylenol when ibuprofen is available?
Posted on 3/24/16 at 9:45 am to Chad504boy
Yes, in this case, ibuprofen does truly expire. Some drugs are shelf stable for years, but ibuprofen is prone to photochemical oxidation. The major degradation product is 4-isobutylacetophenone, but as many 7 degradation products have been reported in tablets 12 months past the original expiration (36 months total from date of manufacture).

kind of like bottled water having an expiration date

but ibuprofen is prone to photochemical oxidation
so would they have to be exposed to UV light, or would keeping them in a bottle work?

Ibuprofen has been used as sort of a model drug to determine forced degradation in a laboratory setting to establish protocols for determining the stability of other drugs. Certainly light would speed the process of the oxidative cleavage of the carboxylic acid, but ibuprofen has produced degradation products under thermal stress, as well.
