re: Does LSU not give a crap about smart, in-state high school students?

Unless I'm just reading it wrong, which I might it looks like University of Alabama Mid Career Pay is $117,800
Your number is calculated differently than the image I quoted. Yours is the median salary for those with 10+ years of experience (this can include people with 30+ years of experience). The other is the average annual salary of those 15 years out of college.
I'm not saying that the original image is correct, just that the numbers you showed aren't proof that it's incorrect.

It's estimated by LSU to be around 35k per year for an in-state to live on campus at LSU with housing/meals/transport
TOPS at the highest level is good for about $7600 of that.
Didn't know room and board jumped that high. I figured you lived close enough to campus that he could still live in the nest with you, or you would tell him to find a job and live in an apartment with friends.

Conversely, our daughter is a senior in HS in Florida and she got emails, texts, and even a few phone calls from LSU all the time. I think the schools seek out a certain percentage of students from different demographics. We never heard from a single Florida school for the most part.

Room and board can cost between 8-10 grand a year and they want all freshman on campus. My kid lived in Miller freshman year and they rarely had a working AC, the mold is out of control so she was always sick. The amount of money we pay, the least LSU could do is have a pretty decent place for kids to live.

In fairness… lsu has built some very impressive residence dorms recently..
Cypress hall.. camellia hall.. spruce.. and others…. then all the new housing on Nicholson by fat boys etc.. they will be tearing down to old women’s dorms on campus lake and build new stuff..
The housing on campus and dining options are pretty nice..but yes it was bad at times…
They stopped maintaining some of the other stuff that was/is coming down..
Life on campus is pretty good..

My nephew got a similar "run around" from LSU. LSU, for whatever reason, was stalling and couldn't articulate an update or an approximate timeline for acceptance, dorm selection, etc.
He got full rides elsewhere...in-state and out-of-state. He accepted Loyola in New Orleans' offer and withdrew his application to LSU shortly thereafter and before they could accept. They called a few times and sent letters, magazines, and pamphlets after he withdrew his application, but they never answered/returned the calls or messages.
As far as I know, he loved his time at Loyola, and has done well.

Where’s your fees? Also the meal plan that LSU quoted me was $4,500.

Seems strange on the 36. Why would a kid with a 36 even go to LSU? Surely they could go to a good school (aka not another SEC school). Are you sure that was the score?

Every school seems to prefer the more lucrative out of state students. That is just the business now
That’s all well and fine, but these schools should stop accepting our tax money then. As a tax payer in this state (especially one who is paying for grammar school/high school out of his own pocket), it’s hard to square the university taking our tax dollars and spending it on OOS kids who will just leave after graduation.

Your numbers aren’t too far off just based on the high level TOPS award. It seems like LSU is probably losing high quality in-state students because either they aren’t competitive with what kids are getting from other states or at least the perception and response times caused families to lose interest.

First off, solicitations and even swag don't necessarily indicate that a school will offer scholarship $$$ or even admission. This especially applies to the most-competitive schools.
Secondly, don't feel bad about LSU ignoring your high-achieving kid, because LSU seemingly ignores high-achieving out of state kids too. I've seen a lot of kids in the Houston area who received the top offer from Bama (all expenses paid for 5 (maybe 6?) years including a study abroad semester and some extra $$$ on top of that) and full ride offers from schools like Auburn, A&M, South Carolina, Arky, and Baylor. The best offer I've heard of from LSU? $10K total (not per year) in tuition support. Now, I'm not sure if these kids really pushed for more $$$ from LSU, but the above schools I mentioned either made these offers completely unsolicited or effectively with the acceptance letter, i.e. no special applications, etc.
My best guesses as to why LSU does not throw $$$ at these kids:
1. LSU doesn't have the $$$ to really be competitive, and/or
2. LSU likely knows that a good amount of Houston kids will end up at LSU regardless of scholarship offers, and they aren't interested in competing with Bama for the top academic performers, as a lot of those kids will go to UT Austin (which for all intents and purposes offers no merit-based scholarships to in-state kids) anyways.

you aren't understanding my point. i at no point disparaged any of the other state schools, but you've certainly disparaged lsu. lsu will get you as far in life as you want to go for nearly every profession.
i can only hope to raise children with so enough options to be able to escape the overly politicized slums of lsu.

It’s not just the out of state offers that is so frustrating. It’s the fact LSU is the worst instate offer by far. LSU told us and a room full of seniors that LSU is worth taking on debt and having to pay for their network.

An MBA from an S.E.C. school or any school outside the top 20 is pretty worthless as is an MBA without work experience. No gain there. Again - why go to such school with a 90+ percentile score? Mind boggling

They really should get some competent student advisors before trying to sell that line of bullshite.
