Drove from Baton Rouge to Corpus Christi

Southern Louisiana all the way to Corpus Christi is pretty butt ugly to be honest. I’ve lived in Baton Rouge and the Houston area for years and the portion of the route to Houston wasn’t a big surprise to me. I had never driven from Houston to Corpus and figured it got better. It’s pretty much an ugly desolate waste land. In general Texas has some pretty areas, but it certainly has a huge amount of ugly too.
With that said, Corpus Christi is surprisingly very nice. It is heavily industrialized, but with a great coastline and downtown area. Going from Houston to Corpus reminded me of when I was young and the interstates weren’t complete. Don’t make that drive unless you have a mechanically sound vehicle and a full tank of gas. Judging from my initial impression, I wouldn’t mind living in Corpus for a while. Anybody on this board live there?

I was surprised at the size of Corpus Christi the first time I visited a couple of years ago. You don't hear much about it.

Perhaps you should take a drive through St. Francisville or Washington, La (the one near Opelousas off i49). Both are probably some of the better looking areas of the state. Parts of CenLa/NorthLa are pretty too. I have always found the Frogmore area to be aesthetically pleasing.
Edit: Lemme clarify, I am referring to nature and not "city scape" areas.
The city scape of anywhere in La outside of the 4 or 5 bigger cities in La aren't much to look at, and even parts of those are bad. Especially compared to Texas cities.

You should’ve gone a little farther south than Corpus and explored the King Ranch

Plant baws and Mexicans.

I lived in Portland (Corpus suburb) in the late 70’s. I absolutely loved it.

I never could stay sober on the Corpus Christi Bay.

It’s coastal prairie. In my opinion it’s a great drive. Beautiful farm land.
On the way back up go though Aransas and take 35 up through Rockport/Fulton.
Eat at the Executive Surf Club downtown, it’s a cool place.
Stop at Prasek’s in Hilje for kolaches.
I go to Corpus 4-5 times a year for work and really like the area and people.

Is that where the King Ranch is? I never looked into it but I always figured it was somewhere more west. I have heard Corpus is nice though and much more of a "city" than people realize.

It seems like you’re never going to get finished driving past it.

Technically the King Ranch starts around Kingsville, Tx which is outside of Corpus.
And it goes on forever (west & south) until you hit the Rio Grande valley
My dad is from that area and I lived around there for a while as a kid.

Try the drive from West Palm Beach to Baton Rouge. The first 9-10 hours are getting out of FL, and an ugly arse drive.

The coast is directly across the street from downtown. I drove along the water to the island where Texas A&M Corpus Christi is on. Great houses along the route.

We drove from Baton Rouge to Key West once when I was in college.

I was born and raised here, went to school at LSU and stayed there one more year, then came back here to CC.
It’s not the top place in the state to live, but it’s cheap, nice enough, safe enough, and entertaining enough. There’s some great fishing, plenty of beach access, and it’s nice that for a metro of about half a mil, it’s not a liberal wasteland. For the most part, politics takes a backseat here.
ETA: and when the new bridge over the harbor gets finished, it’ll result in another economic boost for the port. Hoping the O&G industry hangs on, because this is a major port for petroleum.
