Did your child attend regular EBR elementary school? Did you feel like your child was prepared when they went to Sherwood Middle? I’m just curious.

My wife and I did the EBR Magnet mania day this year and our son will be in kindergarten next year. We went into one of the informational classes and the lady explained there were 1,800 applicants for kindergarten. We placed BRCVPA as our first and Mayfair as our second. We got our denial letter like most others. My son currently goes to LaSalle. He was tested this week for their gifted and talented and got in. We send him to tutoring two days a week and will be doing more this summer. My wife and I are having to supplement his education to make up for what he isn’t getting in school.

Most of the top programs have room for about 50-70% of applicants.

Better chance with BRFLAIM French, 100% chance with BRFLAIM Mandarin.

Westdale Elem, BRFLAIM, BRCVPA, Sherwood Middle, and Baton Rouge High are as good as or better than any private school in BR.

Baton Rouge High took all 9th grade applicants that qualified this year.

Wow. 1800 applicants? I had no idea that many students applied for Magnet kindergarten. I always wondered about the stats, but I couldn’t find any. Does anyone know how many kids get waitlisted for each school specially WHAM and Mayfair?

I know about 3 years ago Mayfair Lab was still getting on its feet. They were giving high admission priority to kids (that qualified) that lived in a certain geographical distance from the school. I don’t know if that is still the case now.

We send our son to Kumon. It runs about 250 a month. He goes Tuesday and Thursday for an hour. He gets 30 min of reading and 30 mins of numbers. I am amazed at how far ahead he is from class. Tonight’s homework from pre-K 4 are trace the letter u and find the number 11. Homework from kumon is addition +3’s and writing 24 different words and trying to read sentences with the 24 words. I still haven’t lined up tutoring for the summer I have the number of a pre-K teacher that will be able to read with him two days a week.

Will you stick with the gifted route at Laselle or will you try again for a magnet program in October? What schools would you choose as your top two?

Initially received a waitlist letter for WHAM then got a acceptance letter one week after that. We live just outside of the 2 mile priority zone so it is borderline miracle we got in on the first try.

Our three backup plans were to continue with Runnels, St. Jean Vianney Or gifted LaSalle. Was impressed with St. Jean and it is/was about 4-5 thousand cheaper than Runnels.

Runnels did not prepare for Westdale (WHAM) which is much more rigorous at least in the early grades.

Mrs Pimp made her presence known at the admission office. Chatted people up, made a positive impression. We filled out applications and our youngest entering kindergarten had to take a proficiency test. We did it all in good cheer, and it worked. Our path was Westdale Heights Academic Magnet ( outstanding ) Sherwood Middle Magnet ( ok ) and BRMHS ( outstanding ). Just prepare for it to be pretty rigorous and know that they will likely run into Government School ideas you don’t agree with regularly that you might want to stay on top of. But they’ll have a big leg up when it comes to college and their peer group will be really smart. And there is generally zero behavioral issues because the waiting list is so long they toss the kids who act like garbage with the quickness. Our experience gets an A+ —-we have been extremely satisfied. Putting 20k a year in my pocket every year has also allowed me to max out college savings too.

I’d go to the admissions office and be really agreeable and make some friends. Then follow up with who you meet on the phone. Work it for your kids.

Interesting to see comments about having your kids tested for gifted. My experience in Alabama, both when I was in school and now with 2 kdis in school, is it at teh schools' and teachers' discretion who is tested for the gifted program, and it's not done until 2nd or 3rd grade. Gifted program in our school district didn't start until 3rd grade, and then it was only one hour a week. It's more rigorous now that my daughter in in 6th grade.

So EBR magnet doesn’t do the lottery after the test anymore?

Admission is hand picked like private schools now?

Not all magnets are created equal. For the more popular magnets like WHAM, FLAIM, etc. it’s supposedly testing and then lottery with an emphasis on a 2 mile priority zone, then outside of that. Siblings get priority as I’ve been told. I have a hunch there is some cherrypicking going on for the popular magnets.

If you live within a certain distance of a specific school, your kid can get in automatically - at least thats how it was a few years ago when we went through the process for my kid. He's currently at Westdale, and i have mixed feelings. It's a good school but it's a fairly rigorous environment. Be prepared for insane amounts of homework, and be aware that the kids only get 1 short recess after lunch, instead of the 3 we got when I was a kid. If your child needs lots of physical activity, I wouldn't recommend Westdale.
I would encourage you to check out some of the charter schools, a lot of tjem werent around 4-5 years ago and ive heard good things. Good luck.

EBR Magnet is still a lottery. We were told at Magnet Mania that some individuals are given more priority if your sibling currently attends, if your within a certain mile radius of the campus or if you have certain economic issues. We will try again next year and I believe we will change it to Mayfair (1) and BRCVPA (2). I like that Mayfair goes up to 8th grade and the scores seem to be similar. We live off of Drusilla and are out of the zones for the magnet schools. I want to stay in Baton Rouge but my wife wants to move to either Ascension, Livingston, or Central. I can't say if we will stay at LaSalle, but I am very thankful they have the gifted program. According to my four year old when he found out, they walked him across to the room he will be in next year and showed him science projects. He said he will get to make a volcano and learn about plants and trees. I am still trying to find out of the program is all day or just for certain subjects.

Go to magnet mania in the fall and go to the open houses. They will give you contacts that you can email and get this information. You have to ask though, they don't really publish it.

This was one of the things that turned me and my wife off when we went to the open house at WHAM.
