IMO - Phones are the new, perfect drug. Completely legal and highly addictive. Apple is you plug. Start them off young.

Kids are 'speaking like Americans' and 'can’t climb stairs' due to too much screen time

quote:

Some reception age school kids are "unable to climb a staircase", while others use Americanisms in their speech due to excessive screen time, a survey of teachers revealed.

The pandemic has long been cited as a reason for the decline in school readiness among reception-aged children, but some teachers participating in one annual poll believe the "Covid baby" explanation is becoming an excuse.

The survey, conducted by market research group Savanta on behalf of early years charity Kindred2, involved 1,000 primary teachers in England and Wales. It found that 49% of teachers believed the problem had worsened over the past year.

quote:

The government has prioritised school readiness, aiming for 75% of children to reach a good level of development by the time they join reception – an increase from the current 68%. Felicity Gillespie, director of Kindred2, stated that the report’s findings suggested "too many parents are failing to support the development of their children, in spite of – we know – having their best interests at heart".

quote:

Equally, one in four kids who began reception last September were not toilet trained – and children with poor basic motor skills and underdeveloped muscles, which they associated with excessive screen use. "I’ve got two children who physically cannot sit on the carpet. They don’t have core strength," a reception teacher in the north-west told researchers.

quote:

A deputy head in the north-west reported an uptick in "delayed walkers" exhibiting "clumsy movements, dropping things, unable to climb a staircase", while a reception educator noted pupils adopting Americanisms such as "trash" and "vacation" learnt from online content. Nearly two in five (39%) educators attributed "less time spent in early childhood education due to lockdown restrictions" as a major contributor to school readiness issues, yet a senior leader from the East Midlands stated: "There’s only so long you can blame Covid for that. I’m sorry, but a lot of it comes down to parenting as well."

quote:

Less than half (44%) of the 1,000 parents with reception-aged children surveyed acknowledged the importance of their young ones knowing how to handle books correctly, flipping through pages instead of swiping or tapping like on electronic gadgets. Three quarters (76%) recognised toilet training as an essential preschool skill.

While nine out of ten parents felt their child was ready for school, teachers observed that one in every three was not.

I've seen this in person. One of hte test we give at Pre-k screening is to hand a kid a book and see if they can orient it correctly. More and more of them look at it like a foreign object. They tap and swipe at it.

it's really sad. We're getting a TON of kids with speech issues too. It's way over the norm.

Parents who give their tiny kids phones or tablets are fricking scum. There are some here that are doing it right now I’m sure. Have fun with the autism and screwy brain development!

My 2 year old asks me every day "daddy how was your day"? and we have full blown conversations. He will be 3 in a month and couldnt be more proud how well he communicates. You know why? We talk to him like a kid, not a toddler. And we always have him around adults who do the same. It aint hard.

Where in the heck are they watching “American” content? Most of YouTube Kids seems to be Eastern Europe and Russian stuff.

Scruffy brings it up in all of these threads.

Social media and these handheld tech devices are fricking destructive.

They are addictive and have so many negatives that people wave away.

This isn’t a “old man yelling at clouds” situation.

We are hamstringing the young.

Unfortunately not everyone is qualified to be a good parent, but almost anyone can produce a child

What is "reception-aged" kids? Are they talking about kids at Preschool age (assuming 4), or those about to enter PK (assuming 3)

5 yr old ask Alexa to solve the YouTube kids parental verification question

Unfortunately for my son at that age, I actually checked in on what Alexa was asked every week or so. Straight up busted, never did it again. Now he asks Siri on the phone his mom bought him quickly after the divorce. Now who barely has a C in math, my kid!

I'd assume age 4-5 entering first grade.

quote:

In England, children are legally required to start school in the term after their fifth birthday. This is known as the compulsory school age.

quote:

In the UK, the equivalent of kindergarten is called nursery school. It is not a formal part of schooling, but there is encouragement for children to spend at least 15 hours a week following a set curriculum from the age of 3.

It's easier for parents to avoid being parents. The bitching is constant about Youtube algorithms, etc, and nobody ever replies when I mention that they're the ones that bought the device.
