Was health insurance ever better in the past?

My very first job out of law school in 2001 had such awesome insurance I literally never paid a cent. Example: I had what turned out to be just a tight IT band and it paid for orthopedist, imaging, sports/running specialist, custom orthotics, PT and sports massage.

Fast forward to 2017 when I was undergoing chemo and all the stuff surrounding cancer, and we still had “great insurance,” but I’d regularly get $500+ bills for checkups and three times had I not fought like hell I would’ve been stuck with 5-figure bills due to insurance not liking the timing of certain treatments and scans.

Broken.

That seems really high.

We had a situation where we were uninsured for about 45 days at the end of last year. Of course, my son breaks his nose in two places and needs a CT scan and stitches while on vacation in Telluride in December. Total without insurance for an adult CT scan, ER visit and stitches was $2800.

Eliminate the fee for service payment model and replace it with one that actually reimburses payments for outcomes not just services.

Last month if my year my youngest needed a stool sample. The urgent care sent us to Christus. By running labs there it became an inpatient charge even though I just dropped it off.

1000 dollars to cover deductible

What a racket.

Yea! When it was based on risk. Now it’s just a private run entitlement. It’s just pre-paid care.

Its like sticker price on a car. You see the $5,559 number and think “Oh thank gawd i have insurance!” It’s the best advertising insurance companies could ever get. If you paid cash, your bill would have likely been $366 or less.

I don't post on here usually, but just saw this thread and had to comment. I can get a CT for $150-200 through my practice. Direct Primary Care partnered with a Health Savings Plan like Zion Healthcare runs as low as $175/month and way less out of pocket costs. Much smarter and easier, but people stay with their crappy employer insurance plans for some reason. This model is big in the rest of the country but only a few practices in Baton Rouge, link below to search. I happen to think Sasser DPC is the best.

Yes, was much much better before Obamacare. People didn't listen when they were told what would happen.

Imaging center, but it is being billed as an outpatient hospital service, so deductible/coinsurance, not a copay

So basically a hospital associated imaging center. Bet if you got a line item breakdown of the cost, you'd see a large facility fee tacked on. You wouldn't see this at independent imaging centers etc.

One of the many rackets of Healthcare and insurance. Hospitals and associated hospital practices including imaging centers, doctor specialities, etc. Are allowed to charge an additional facility fee in addition to the normal cost of the procedure and/or clinic visit. Theoretically this allows hospital to recoup lost costs elsewhere and that in general its more expensive to run a hospital facility therefore they get reimbursed more.

Doctor owned or independently owned
practices are not allowed to charge facility fees. So you have a situation where it's advantageous to the hospital to run speciality own practices and bring in higher revenue than what an independent doctor office can. Some offices find it hard to compete with the hospital because of this
And all in the end it just costs the rest of us more in insurance premiums.

Yes it was far better. Before I was promised stuff by Big Ears, my insurance as a business owner (no group) was $600/mth for family with reasonable deductible. Now it's over $2,000 per month with $7,000 deductible. The joys of health insurance.

Then the hospital gets to use the discount to maintain their nonprofit status.

Had MRI 2 months ago. total bill was $9400. paid $100 deductible and then was charged additional $100. insurance paid $9200. GF had mri 1 month ago same total bill but was charged $1200 total. not sure exact difference in our insurance plans besides she has a high deductible plan and i don't.

it just doesn't add up. if the machine is $1M and the tech and doctor or paid $500/hr for this that leaves $9400-$1000= $8400 to cover cost of machine and overhead. if they only do one mri a day it takes 120 days to pay for machine. they obviously do more than one a day and it took me 3 weeks to get an appointment. unless the mri machine breaks at the same rate as the McD's icecream machine, MRI are a profit maker.anyone want to open an MRI shop?

You are getting screwed. Bad!

Advice: Have a friend call the same facility and ask how much $$ for the exact same procedure you had if he/she paid in cash.

There are medical billing errors all the time. Like often.

That scan should cost about $2500 - $3000 cash. And about $250-$300 for the Radiologist reading fees.

Oh. Well, you're paying for 9 other uninsured bums.
That's only part of the issue.

The other half is fatties. 30 years ago, when insurance premiums were low, we had little to no premiums and deductibles were fractions of today. The cost of health insurance has expanded (pun) at the same rate as obesity.

If someone was at the wheel of our government, he would offer lower premiums for healthy individuals and impose fees on fatties. This would drive down costs tremendously.

Its a sad day when you take a nice little chunk out every paycheck for health insurance hoping never to use it. Then the day comes when you finally have to use it and boom you get a huge bill even after paying a ton into it. To top it off most hard working folks try holding off ever having to go to the emergency room but when you do BOOM 300 right out of pocket for checking in. Then while waiting you see all the regulars there with a cough or a sneeze waiting to be seen for minor bullshite knowing they wont even see a bill. That's where the middle class is these days scared to death to go to the hospital.
