I took the test and got interviewed and bombed it. My MIL worked and Exxon for 25 yrs and knew one of the guys doing the interviews. She told me questions that they might ask and I prepared way in advance. I get to the interview and it was 2 people asking me a shitload of situational questions that the MIL never told me about. I literally said "umm I don't know" for one of the answers. I knew half way through the interview I had no chance. Have a couple friends that are process operators there now. One of the them never has time to do shite. Have fun

Relate every answer to a situation you have encountered before.
Safety is paramount, but they will spot a BS answer.
Don't name drop people you know.
Don't get lulled in to comfort, these interviewers aren't HR and aren't bubba's. They are selected because of their history.
Expect 50-60 candidates for 20 spots or so.

Unless you're applying for a fast food joint, "Is he/she alive and seem semi-responsible?", you should always be shooting to impress. Especially at a Exxon type of company.

My brother received an interview invite yesterday also. He took the Exxon test 2 years ago in Houston when they had a special session for prior military people. This is the first time he has heard from them since then.

Questions that will be asked for sure.
You are tasked with doing a job and you deem it unsafe, what did you do?
You do a job with a set procedure, you discover a better way to do the job. What did you do?
Describe an accident you were involved in. What made it an accident?
How did you handle a problem with a coworker constantly not doing their job?
Describe a problem you had to solve without any input. Now a problem that you had to figure out and you were wrong. A problem that you found a different solution from a coworker and had to only choose one.
Describe your biggest weakness.
How do your coworkers describe you.
Explain your working relationship with someone that you cannot see eye to eye with.

Makes me want to puke every time I hear that

Well, it may seem like BS, but it works. Not even a kool-aid drinker, but the whole idea behind the culture works.
Not saying it can't be overbearing or improved.

Got burned on a stream tracer hanging down on a walkway, they blamed me for not recognizing the hazard.
I shoved OSHA in their face:
quote:
1910.261(k)(11):
Steam and hot-water pipes. All exposed steam and hot-water pipes within 7 feet of the floor or working platform or within 15 inches measured horizontally from stairways, ramps, or fixed ladders shall be covered with an insulating material, or guarded in such manner as to prevent contact.
1910.262(c)(9):
Steam pipes. All pipes carrying steam or hot water for process or servicing machinery, when exposed to contact and located within seven feet of the floor or working platform shall be covered with a heat-insulating material, or otherwise properly guarded.
I got transferred. "we can't cover every steam line in the plant"

I interviewed for them back in 2003.The guy that interviewed me did not like my dad who also worked at Exxon so I never had a chance. Also if you're white you have less of a chance. ExxonMobil is affirmative action central.
Maybe something there. A recently retired Marine I know was told a week ago he was not going to be hired.
No reasons given insofar as I know. Did well on his tests and interview from all accounts. Exemplary service record, LAR Infantry, 8th&I, MHLA Squadron, Drill Field- top of the pyramid in all billets ending as a Chief Drill Instructor. He even worked process at a plant in the almost exactly two years between his first hitch and when he was recalled.
Sad really. He's a good guy, honest, smart, diligent and hard working. I advised him to look into construction management and maybe hook up with one of the veteran friendly construction companies in BR where his skills would be appreciated and applied.

The pictures of the new hire classes disproves this theory.

That's good to know and I retract and apologize for any theory I seemed to be advancing.
Having said that, the facts remain respecting the young Marine I mentioned.

Im a ptec student now and have done a couple interviews. One with shell and the other with dow. You definitely do have to wow them, at my school we have hr people from plants that volunteer to come do mock interviews to help us out because they know how important it is.
Do you have a degree or experience in operations? Most people that have either of these two would know the answer to your question so I'm figuring you don't.

Exxon is very veteran friendly. It is noted during the selection process

If you are familiar with LPSA, LPO, NLI, LI, SS,WP. I say take advantage of it and use it.

While you're in the interview, somebody will be in the parking lot measuring the truck nuts on your F250. Make sure yours are the biggest.

got the rest, what are these?
and I shouldn't say "LPO, LPSA" I should describe what I "feel/do" and phrase it in the way where I'm thinking "what's the worst that could happen?"

For anybody in the know, if you had your pick to work at any plant on the river, would Exxon be in your top 5? Why or why not?
