FedEx Flight 705 and the murder-suicide/crash attempt by Auburn Calloway.

He boarded the scheduled flight as a deadhead passenger carrying a guitar case concealing several hammers and a speargun. He intended to disable the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder before take-off and, once airborne, kill the crew with hammers so their injuries would appear consistent with an accident rather than a hijacking.

One of the pilots wrote a book about this incident some years back. My dad met him at a book signing and talked to him quite extensively. That plane was not designed to do some of the maneuvers he pulled that day.

The pilot was going nearly inverted to try and keep the attacker off balance.

definitely not.
Supposedly the cockpit and interior windscreen were covered in blood. Those guys are lucky to be alive.
There is a good Air Disasters episode on this that includes recorded communication from the cockpit to air traffic control and the local authorities.

I've got a print out of the CVR transcript from that flight, after the FBI had gone over it and made notes and observations, pretty interesting reading, and pretty shocking to read how dumb the FBI sounds in some of their observations

Can you elaborate? I thought you were a pilot so you'd have some interesting insight on this. Do you fly passenger 777 or a cargo 777?

Wow. Don't remember this! My sister's father in law was a Fed Ex pilot for years. Need to ask him what he remembers about this.

It's just interesting to read how the whole thing transpired, the crew just never fathomed that this could happen. One interesting fact is the original FO was a small chick that weighed about 110-115lbs. She trip traded with FO that was on the flight, and even though he was severely injured, he was a big strong guy and played a huge role in subduing Calloway. Calloway came from behind the FE, beaned him with a hammer then got a full swing(right backhand) to the FO's head, with the head of the hammer punching through the skull. He then took a full swing at the CAs's head that was partially deflected off of the fire handle guard on the overhead panel, lessening the blow but still taking off part of the CA's ear. There were several times that all three pilots were out of their seats trying to overpower Calloway, with the autopilot off and in a shallow banking descent at a very low altitude. At first Callowway feigned that he was giving up an the CA said something like "that's enough, don't hurt him too much," after Calloway resumed his attack it was "kill him, kill him, kill that motherfricker." the fight continued until after they were on the ground and the cockpit was covered in blood. They came very close to losing that airplane several times. One of the FBI notes in the margin, after reading the pilots use the term "Roger" in their transmissions was, "it was never determined who was referred to as Roger."

They should if economy on your 777's are 10 abreast instead of 9. Still my second favorite Boeing though.

American and a couple of foreign airlines do that.
Do you know what causes that horrid noise that comes from the floorboards of the Airbus planes before and during takeoff?
Never flew on a passenger version of what the FedEx 705 was. I think the Air Force probably still flies DC-10s but that's about it. I'd be surprised if FedEx still has more than a handful of them. Kind of funny looking on the ground with the forward landing gear so far back to balance the weight of that tail engine.

I don't know very much about the scarebus, FedEx might have a few MD-11s(they came from my company) left, but I don't think they still fly the DC-10 though, could be wrong, just not around them very much
