Ford Mustang Mach-E Recalled Because Battery Can’t Handle Owners Flooring It
LINK
Ford is recalling nearly 35,000 units of the 2021 and 2022 Mustang Mach-E equipped with the extended-range battery over concerns that the electric crossover could lose power while driving. The recall is the Blue Oval's second attempt to resolve an issue with a component found inside of the Mach-E's high voltage battery pack that may fail while DC fast charging or flooring the car's accelerator pedal one too many times
quote:
"Direct Current (DC) fast charging and repeated wide open pedal events can cause the high voltage battery main contactors to overheat," reads the NHTSA recall report. "Overheating may lead to arcing and deformation of the electrical contact surfaces, which can result in a contactor that is prevented from closing or a contactor that welds closed."
quote:
Another concern is just how swamped Ford's techs might be with replacing the HVBJBs in nearly 35,000 cars. The part itself is located inside of the sealed battery pack, meaning that in order to replace just the part, the 1,300-pound battery pack must be dropped from the car and opened on order to access the HVBJB. According to another user on Mach-E Forums, a high voltage battery swap takes approximately 25 hours on a warranty replacement.
25 hours to fix. Yikes.

At least you can say you’re saving the planet
But saving those poor 7 year old kids from the Congo in the cobalt mines… not so much

Ford is recalling nearly 188,000 Mustang sports cars from the 2020 to 2023 model years because of a problem with the system that monitors the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir and is supposed to illuminate a warning light if the level is too low.
Ford taking it on the chin.

That thing is NOT a mustang. They are simply highjacking the name

Seems these things should've been tested before rushing to market.

It’s a car robot. Mustangs smell and sound better.
ETA: parents had a cream color 1966 Mustang when I was about 4 or 5. I must have imprinted on it bc it’s been my favorite car ever since. Yet, I’ve never owned one. Maybe one day but it won’t be an E.

Exactly. You’re not going to drop it off at 7am and pick it up at 8am the next day.

That’s labor hours. Those shops aren’t open 24 hours a day, and they have other Fords to fix.

Maybe this entire EV debacle will make Ram postpone their 1500 line EV implementation. Let me keep my hemi!

25 book hours or 25 actual hours? That can make a huge difference depending on the technician.
Plus that’s more hours than to replace a friggen engine and trans.

They are moving forward but they are quietly backtracking from from their commitment to go full EV.
So is General Motors, who is actually developing an updated line of V8 engines. But they’ve also burned through close to $20b on EV development.
Toyota and Mazda are barely dipping their toe in the water on EV’s. They will have new products out soon but they aren’t abandoning their gas engines.
Honda has partnered with GM instead of going all in alone, but that partnership is probably at risk now since both companies are growing skeptical of rapid EV adoption from the buying public.
VW and Hyundai have been aggressive with EVs with underwhelming results. Their conventional SUVs and sedans are still dominating those company’s sales charts.
Tesla is the only one that’s really pushed the envelope. They don’t have conventional dealers and all their consumer vehicles use the same chassis and share components. They are doing very well and they are the leading EV company. Any EV sales growth is thanks to them, but also benefiting them almost exclusively. If EV’s really are the future, Tesla is what will keep American cars relevant. Not Ford.
