Burgett worked for the city for 13 years prior to his retirement on March 31.

bond set at $500,000.

Police said the investigation began April 3 when they were made aware of irregularities in the movement of city funds by Burgett in the days leading up to his retirement.

District Attorney Danny Carr said the dollar amount is six figures.

From another story:
quote:
Last year, the ABC 33/40 News I-Team raised questions about Homewood's high number of city credit cards used by employees. Our team first reported that 35 employees had city-issued credit cards and spending topped $860,000 over the course of a year. The city moved to limit that number to department heads.

The story announcing his retirement:
quote:
Finance Director Robert Burgett is in the latter days of his 13 years with Homewood, with his last day on the job set for March 31.
Each took advantage of an opportunity offered by the City Council. City employees who retire prior to April 1 will receive a health insurance stipend in retirement.

Skimming off the top ain't never hurt nobody. Besides, he was underpaid by the city and was just getting back what he thought was rightfully his.

Imagine retiring and thinking you got away with it and its in the past.. then a week later you get arrested. I bet that surprised the shite out of him.

They were probably doing city Buisness on credit cards with some type of rewards system and someone was pocketing the cash and/or points.

The shite always floats to the surface when the thief is gone and someone else steps in or feels free to voice concerns. You often hear in these situations that the thief was a person who never took vacations.

Whatever IRS auditors do to stop fraud ought to be redirected to government officials that handle money

I figured he had been skimming for years and was only caught once he left.
However, it appears he started building up his retirement nest egg on his way out the door.

Unacceptable for a white make to do this.
A black woman on the other hand would be celebrated.
