trailblazing former writer drank herself to death
This is a very long piece and very worth the read
It's not really a sports article so I'm putting it on the OT. This woman was a prodigy getting a job with the NY times at 24yo. She was in the spotlight back in the 90s for some highly publicized locker room fiascos.
This is a tale of alcoholism and erratic behavior derailing the life and career of a very talented person.
There are some good bits in here about jack Morris and Bo schembechler showing what pieces of shite they are as a bonus.

Talk about pieces of shite, how about her dad Walter. Hey everybody, lets have a big wedding and during the feast lets slay the king of the North, his mom, his army and his fricking Dire Wolf. I'm glad this chick is dead. The less Frey's the better.

They were both 100% right.

Definite douches, but I will never understand sending women into actual dressing rooms and locker rooms. Or men into womens locker rooms (if that happens)? Always a recipe for disaster. Young, pissy, and privileged alpha males in a locker room. It is called "locker room behavior" for a reason.
As I understand it now there is a period where the players dress and media aren't allowed, and then the reporters are let in. Maybe I am wrong though.
I've seen many a broke down drunk in my job. It is terrible. Saw a woman the other day. Late 30's early 40's with kids and husband. Bored housewife syndrome I believe with her too though. Saw her at 10AM and she stunk of booze. Stale booze smell AND fresh booze. Probably to steady her hands. Sad...
Saw the line in the story though, about her waiting tables while starting out at a German "Wursthaus". She was doomed. Then go into the world of 90's sports reporting. I bet she WAS the life of the party though. I've met a couple of those too. So fun to be around you are addicted to them. Even though you know you are not helping them by partying with them. We probably have all had a friend like that. They are a blast, but you realize their drinking is on another level. I've had to distance myself from a couple over the years. You just feel like YOU are the reason they got BOMBED on a random thursday instead of just having 5 or 6 and going to bed. Your presence is an excuse to push it and get trashed.
I am now rambling.......

Sad story.
The bottle is bigger than any man or woman.
She settled for Harvard after not getting in to Georgetown.

Absolute lack of logical thinking. Sample size of 1. Amazes me.

I remember the women in the locker room controversy in the 90's. I remember it for being one of the first times I've felt a dislike for the media (dislike to be confirmed over and over again in the past 20 years).
Question media was asking: "Why shouldn't women be in locker rooms to do their job when them men are, that's sexist right?"
Question media wasn't asking: "Why do reporters need to be in sports locker rooms to begin with? Why not treat paid athletes like working professionals and let them at least be dressed to speak?"
I remember thinking that at 14 or 15 years old, and wondering how a bunch of working college graduates couldn't think to ask themselves the same questions.

Good job by deadspin writing what should have been a reasonable length article into a novel longer than the unabridged version of War and Peace.

No. Of course not. It's their turn. Why do you hate women?

Frey took a summer internship with the Detroit Free Press upon graduating in 1990. She got lots of attention almost immediately—though not the kind she would have hoped for. No, Frey owed her first national notice to an ace pitcher being a jerk. She was at Tiger Stadium before a game and approached Jack Morris in the locker room for an interview. Slightly varying versions of Morris’ exact phrasing were published at the time, but the consensus quote had him telling the intern, “I don’t talk to women when I’m naked unless they’re on top of me or I’m on top of them.”
quote:
Frey told her editors what had happened. Neal Shine, publisher of the Free Press, wrote a letter about the incident to Bo Schembechler, who became president of the team after a legendary run coaching Michigan football. Neither Schembechler nor anybody with the organization disputed Frey’s version of what the player said. But instead of apologizing, Schembechler wrote back attacking Frey and her bosses. He told Shine that “your intern watched men from 20 to 65 years of age undress and dress for more than half an hour without asking questions.” “Your sports editor’s lack of common sense in sending a female college intern in a men’s clubhouse caused the problem,” Schembechler wrote. “I really wouldn’t doubt that the whole thing was a scam orchestrated by you people to create a story.” Schembechler said he wouldn’t let any female member of his family into that locker room “regardless of their job description.”
I never knew Schembechler was president of the Detroit Tigers
