FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- As calls grow for him to step down, a defiant Fort Bend County Judge KP George stood with attorneys vowing not to step down following his latest arrest.

Days after walking out of jail, Fort Bend County Judge KP George walked up to our cameras on Tuesday. He didn't talk, but his attorneys had plenty to say.

"This isn't about the truth," attorney Jared Woodfill said. "This isn't about justice. This is about weaponizing the district attorney's office in an effort to take out a political opponent."

On Friday, George was charged with money laundering involving funds from $30,000 to $150,000. Prosecutors accuse him of illegally taking campaign money six years ago and tampering with a campaign finance report.

George said it was a loan he repaid himself, which isn't illegal. His attorneys, though, hinted he may have done something wrong.

ABC13 obtained the campaign finance report. It shows no loan repayment.

Eyewitness News asked his attorney if George removed it. He didn't deny it.

"If you have that complaint, you first go to the Texas Ethics Commission," Woodfill explained. "You file a complaint and describe all the things that you just described."

Legal experts said normally, that is what you would do. However, this isn't George's only legal issue.

He also faces charges connected to an online fake racism case involving a former staffer. Attorney Michael Wynne, who's not connected to the George case, has been involved in other political corruption cases.

He said, considering George's legal situation, he understands the latest charge, but it's not normal.

"The dollar amounts are usually far, far higher, and the circumstances are far more egregious where you're using money from some third party," Wynne explained.

As the case plays out, George continues to serve as county judge. Although, republican commissioners Andy Meyers and Vincent Morales have called for him to step down.

On Tuesday, Democratic commissioner Grady Prestage told ABC13 that George shouldn't step down. However, fellow Democratic commissioner Dexter McCoy said he should leave.

quote:

But George said he won't step down, and he plans to fight multiple charges as he serves as county judge.

"This man is innocent," defense attorney Terry Yates said. "He's done nothing wrong. Nothing criminally wrong."

A spokesperson for the district attorney's office called George's attorneys' claims ridiculous, and they plan to fight the allegations in court.

While George's attorneys talked about these charges in the historic county courthouse ahead of the commissioners court, we haven't seen them in the criminal courthouse yet.

Fort Bend County needs to fracture. I’m tired of being held hostage by inner city politicians because they run up the score in a couple shitty parts of the county.

I have to write a $12,000 property tax check to these guys:

The CoH precincts in Fort Bend have been sending in late ballot boxes forever. It's almost a joke if it weren't so frustrating.

… Fort bend’s growth has meant no race/ethic group (Hispanics in own group) has 30% or more of the population as of 2020 census.

After voting for Republican candidates from 1968 to 2012 it has voted for the Dem candidate in the past 3 Presidential elections. This coincides with 100,000 Asians added from 2010 to 2020 and almost 70,000 Hispanics added during same time frame.

It’s ignorant how Indians and Chinese (or anyone) move to Texas and then vote to change it into California. Dems will eventually take Texas. Diversity is their power play including allowing illegals in and not fighting back as states start letting them vote. Biden pushed almost 1 million fake amnesty illegals out of a ton more using their App which was set up to give them some legitimacy to be allowed to get DL, vote locally in some states, and eventually blur the line enough to be able to move and have enough documentation to vote in other states and even in federal elections before just granting them citizenship.

Biden treat amnesty like a McDonald’s drive thru.

The County Judge has the most power in Texas Counties

far more than any Mayor ,, and Sugarland, the largest city in Ft Bend is a City Manager form of Govt,, the Mayor has little power other than appointment

Within the city of Houston do the various country judges have more power and influence than the mayor of Houston?

Technically Dora the Explorer has more sway than the mayor. Although I don't think she would be crazy enough to force his hand on anything.

Ok. Only living or working within a city I rarely heard anything about the county judges in those areas, so outside of maybe a select handful of items that crossed the county I thought the city govts had the most authority until it bumped into state law.

I do admit over the years hearing more about the Harris County Judge than any other one combined. It seems in counties that aren’t mostly rural the more you hear about them the more corrupt they are.

within ?Within the city of Houston do the various country judges

there's only ONE County Judge... County judge is not a judge that sits over a trial it's the administrator like governor of Harris County
That by Texas Constitution

things like the Metro ,, various boards the City has more slots lol sluts
that any other entitity
But the county and smaller towns, unincorporated county ..Pasadena,, Humble, Tomball, the Memorial area villages they have more power combined than the city of Houston does

In Harris County all the stadiums are under the control of the sports authority ,
Port of Houston the Judge appoint the chairman,,
The county controls the toll roads although they're attempting to change that in the Legislature right now because Whitmire is mayor of Houston,,

flood control But all that is unique to Harris County because only Harris County has the flood control district and only Harris County has a sports authority
Ultimately of the county judge had the power in Harris, and still do in Texas. Although Lena has abdicated much of that power than Rodney has it and he split it with Sylvester

until now
but in Texas a County Judge has more power than a mayor or city council

Harris County would be the 25th largest State by population

Harris County Judge has more real power than governor of Louisiana ,, or South Carolina,, Kansas
