Drove over from college in Jackson, Ms in ‘89 and we got into a huge brawl at Stars one night over a pool game …. Good times

You mean bars were more popular when there weren't 400 other cooler things to entertain you besides paying 500% markup on alcohol?

The Crescent still around? Had the coldest draft beer ever.
Also, the first New Orleans Original Daquiris opened in Hammond back in the spring of ‘83. It was a trailer with a deck built around it on the old Highway 51 just off the 55 exit.
Mariners was always a great place for a burger and a beer. We always called it Hammond’s Port 0’ Call.
Anyone remember the Huddle lounge, we watched it burn down one night at 3am in the morning.

I haven't walked in that place in 35 years!

Spent a LOT of time at the Huddle. Got there in the afternoon to watch Cubs games. Rob would let us in and lock the door behind us. Let us take beers out of the coolers at no charge. For some reason he let my group run tabs that he never collected and would even cash checks for us.

Do they still serve those drafts in the frozen fish bowls?

Bennys, is the only bar that I need as well. Older regulars after work and the younger patrons show up around 9-10. Lots of service industry people after they get off work as well. Great owner great bartenders. Great people can’t go wrong with that.

Not sure as it’s been a while since I’ve been there. My daughter and her friends go there sometimes and have said it gets pretty crowded every weekend and I think the do decent with the students during the week.

Not sure the accuracy of the claim, but there’s been a lot written surrounding Gen Z and not drinking.
Personally I think it’s due to the internet/smartphones. When people talk about the scene for college kids in the 80s/90s there is a feeling of degeneracy. While I’m sure that still occurs, I’d imagine people are more risk averse when there are cameras everywhere recording your every move.
This is a stance with no moral assignment. I’m sure there are both negatives and positives if this has something to do with it.
All of this.
I have a little cousin at LSU right now, and he pretty much confirms this. All he and his friends do is just lay around, play on their phones, smoke weed, and play video games. Not everyone does that, but that's all he and his friends say they do.

Same here but been around Hammond for about 20 years or so. I bet I am only a few miles from you if you're still in Natalbany.

It's where my dad would sometimes go after he divorced my mom in the early 80's.
Now my daughter and her friends go there and Benny's....weird.
The Crescent is where old men went to drink PBR before it became hipster. Benny's was a good place for lunch, beer, and playing cards with the old men in town.
That's how I remember them.
The Brown Door has been through the cycle of boom, bust, boom. I have no idea what it's like now.
Mariner's was good burger for lunch and live music at night.
Do remember the old small downtown place Central Flyway or something like that net to the old pharmacy. Then there was Cate St Cantina between Susan's General and Guy's Grocery.
