Best and the Brightest and all that. First they abandoned SAT scores. Now this. I’d be interested to know what the average reading level is for incoming freshmen.

quote:

The Harvard Math Department will pilot a new introductory course aimed at rectifying a lack of foundational algebra skills among students, according to Harvard’s Director of Introductory Math Brendan A. Kelly. The course, titled Math MA5, will run alongside two established math courses — Math MA and MB — with an expanded five-day schedule. Kelly said that students in MA5 will meet with “one of two instructors all five days” with “a variety of different activities” on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He said the Covid-19 pandemic led to gaps in students’ math skills and learning abilities, prompting the need for a new introductory course.

Had a teacher tell me in HS "the only place where every student is equal is at the bottom"

Not even Trig or something crazy (for me, I am a Math idiot).

It's basic Algebra.

Oh sure, sure. How are they scoring well on the ACT or earning a 4.0+ at their high schools?

If it's Algebra that is wild.

I'm in no position to talk, though. Failed Business Calculus twice at LSU before passing on the third try with a C.

Math is hard.

Well, that’s what happens when you admit students because of the color of your skin, not because of their academic achievements in high school

If you think that's bad just Google "grading for equity". Everyone gets a 50/100 for doing exactly zero work, and there's no due dates for work/homework. Then a 70% is now an A . This mentality is spreading like wildfire after the consultant in charge literally charges $10,000/day from the tax payers. Hey at least everyone passes and teachers and principals look good.

I am just happy the parochial schools haven't bought into the racket yet.

It's been made abundantly clear that these a-hole politicians from Harvard can't fricking do math. Kudos to the university for learning them up.

A lot of non-STEM students struggle with math.

I would've believed you if you said this was a Thomas Sowell quote.

Damn that's some real shite.

How are they scoring 34-36 on the ACT if that's the case?

Ah, the defense of the clear failure of the American education student.

This is basic algebra.

Let me guess. You read that Harvard has a “remedial” math class, and so you assume that it is for black students studying in the engineering department.

Be honest. That’s what you assume, isn’t it?

Why would anyone at Harvard, STEM or not require remedial algebra? Again, how are they scoring 34-36 on the ACT?
