Has there ever been a famous artist in Jackson Square/New Orleans?

I am talking about before they came famous. I'm always down there photographing the Quarter and other areas, and I will stop to look at some of the art on display. Some of the stuff is nice work and not over priced, some of the stuff is junk.
I wonder if any famous artist sold art in the Quarter back in the day. I have ought a couple pieces before, not in the Quarter, and found out later the piece had skyrocketed.

Depends on your definition of famous.
I believe he went by Michal, but yes: Michalopoulos.

That's what I am asking. For example, Pollack selling his giant canvas splash art in Jackson Square for $100 a piece, and people just laughing and pointing as the walk by his art work.
(Didn't happen, just an example)

The best piece I have ever bought was from an artist from the Laffy area (I believe). I forget his last name but his first name is Hank (I'm at work, don't have the piece in front of me to look at name) and he has cerebral palsy. He moved from small studio to small studio.
I ran into him at a tiny studio about 7-8 years ago down at the Cajun Village. He paints swamp bar scenes on slate. He sold me a piece he had just finished painting for $40.
About three years ago, 20/20 (or some news show) did a story on him and the next thing you know, his stuff skyrockets to $600-$1000 a piece. He has stuff hanging in galleries from across the gulf south and other cities.

Peter Oniel has two galleries on Royal....he started as a street artist, although I think he may have originated in Florida he did spend some time in Nola. I own some of his work and love it
