Wallace Fard Muhammad was a very shady character, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Elijah Muhammad then conveniently took over after learning the ropes from Wallace.

He could be Sicilian. He could be an Arab or a Jew from the Middle East. He might be one-quarter black and from the US South. You can't tell just by the picture.
