It depends on where the damage is there are no-go areas which would require roof replacement depending on where the crack location is. If it's in a non-structural bearing portion of the roof you can do a repair. Stop drilling is not approved due to vibration issues with all the harmonic frequencies running through the airframe, the crack tends to run right through the stop drilled hole.

As for x-ray, no we do not use x-ray for the roof or anywhere else most of the time we'll just use a tap test cuz you'll hear the difference when it starts to separate internally from water entrapment.

Yeah, sorry, that was poorly worded on my part — I meant that we rarely if ever get to hear the actual sound on these videos, which makes this instance much more disturbing.

They pulled it out around 8pm last night. The degree of impact is obvious :(

They must have been terrified while they were free falling

A former pilot in the marines and aviation lawyer has same theory as choppadoca on what happened:
quote:

Video of the crash suggested that a “catastrophic mechanical failure” left the pilot with no chance to save the helicopter, said Justin Green, an aviation lawyer who was a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps. It is possible the helicopter’s main rotors struck the tail boom, breaking it apart and causing the cabin to free fall, Green said.

There’s still something that looks to be a blade on top? But the tail is already chopped off. I’m confused. I imagined the whole part of the roof that the propeller is bolted onto peeled off and chopped the tail off. But that isn’t what I’m seeing here? I know NOTHING about helicopters other than I’m never getting in one again. Just trying to understand what happened.

This may have already been discussed, but here's an article from People.

LINK

Below are excerpts from the article.

quote:

The helicopter was operated by tour company New York Helicopters, and CEO Michael Roth, 71, has since said that the pilot radioed base to say they were returning to the helipad to get more fuel shortly before the crash, per The Telegraph.

“He [the pilot] called in that he was landing and that he needed fuel, and it should have taken him about three minutes to arrive, but 20 minutes later, he didn’t arrive,” Roth told the U.K. newspaper.

Roth told the The New York Post of the crash, “The only thing I know by watching a video of the helicopter falling down, that the main rotor blades weren’t on the helicopter."

“And I haven’t seen anything like that in my 30 years being in business, in the helicopter business. The only thing I could guess – I got no clue – is that it either had a bird strike or the main rotor blades failed. I have no clue. I don’t know," he added to the outlet.

An entire family gone in an instant is terrifically sad.

Not the issue here. The main rotor hub and blades are still attached to the mast in the photos. If the mast nut had come off, the main rotor would not still be attached to the mast assembly.

Well maybe. But that looks like the undercarriage to me. And what is that that broke off and flew apart from it?

Here’s the chopper from yesterday

There are a lot of images of it being pulled up last night in this article

There’s nothing left to the roof :(

Looks like a mast bump took off the tail from those pictures.

Would that explain this quote? The "gunshot" sounds being the rotors striking the tail section?

quote:

Dani Horbiak was in her Jersey City home when she heard what sounded like “several gunshots in a row.” She looked out her window and saw the chopper ”splash in several pieces into the river.”

That's not the same helicopter. Different incident.

This is the helicopter from the current crash...mostly white in color and much less left of it.

Has anyone verified that the chopper was manned?

This reminds me of the DC - Potomac incident. And the Canadian airliner that landed belly-up with its wings sheared off ( everyone was made it out alive without a scratch.)

Again, videographers are Johnny on the spot to record tall the airline he tragedies as they occur.

The rotor blades flew off AND the chopper fell apart at the seams like it was slapped together with gum and spit before it fatal voyage.

Nothing to see here
