house was built with outlets in the walls for TVs. This room will be a nursery and I have no intention of installing a tv here. Whats the best way to go about removing the outlet and capping the wires? Do I need an electrician and if so what would something like that cost? Im thinking of just disconnecting wires, twisting and wire nutting. There is another outlet on the same beam 6' below.

Get a tester, turn of breaker and make sure wires are dead

remove outlet from wires.

if its 1 black, 1 white and 1 ground, just wire nut each wire

if its more than one of each, twist wires of same color together and wire nut

put blank cover on box

I would take the outlets out, twist the appropriate sized wire nuts on each wire, and install a blank cover plate over the box...if you can't do it without fricking yourself up, call an electrician....

Tell her if she spent more time in the kitchen, she wouldn't even notice.

First step then would be to see if there are more than one pieces of Romex coming into box. If there is an in and an out, it's not going to be an easy fix

If that j box is attached to the stud you'll probably have to cut the drywall out around it to get it out, then put a piece of drywall in and float texture and paint...they sell small pieces at lowes to do this

then just twist on wire nuts as suggested above, I would also cover the wire nuts with electrical tape. Cut piece of sheet rock to fit hole and float.

Then install a junction box inside the wall and tie and cap the nuts. drywall over everything.

Tell her to just put a cover over it like the other poster mentioned. Any other way is a PITA.

PITA = $$$ if you pay someone

I wouldn't leave wires in the wall without a termination box....I would get an electrician to kill the entire circuit.

If you have to ask the question on how to do something like this, you should
probably hire a professional to do it.

Considerably more work to do that. Need to find the wires in the attic that feed that box and kill them in a box there or find the nearby box that could be feeding it.

It can be done but the simple route is a blank plate. You can buy paintable ones.

Aren't you an electrical engineer?

And work for an electrical company?

I feel like you should know this

That looks to be a box that was added after the house was built. It's not attached to any studs. It's probably fed from the outlet below it.

Kill breaker.

Check for power.

Remove upper box, the two screws are attached to wings behind the Sheetrock that will fold in when you unscrew them.

Remove lower outlet and see if it's the feeder for your top outlet. If so, unhook it from lower outlet and remove romex.

Hang a picture over hole.

Against code. House will burn down within 24 hours after completion

That pic shows a remodelers box...probably installed after house was built.

Get an electrician for fire safety. Simple fix though.

You don't need one. You can remove the entire box, outlet and wire easily.
