How long has Tulane had a fairly large jewish population?

I was talking to a professor about this and it made me think to ask if anyone who's known the area for a long time would know. I've always found it interesting that Tulane while being non affiliated with any particular religion has seemed to have attracted a very large amount of Jewish students in one of the more Catholic dominated parts of the country for at least a few decades. What makes me ask is my professor himself is Jewish (and also probably in his 70s to help you figure out a timeline) told me that when his father applied to Medical School there he was denied because at that point they had quotas for Jewish students, indicated that they even used to discriminate against them.

Has it always? and are those two related in any way? I come from Northern Virginia so I grew up with lots of Jewish friends. I moved to Baton Rouge about 6 years ago and since then I can count on one hand the number of Jewish people I've met.

I have always heard Tulane was founded by Yankees for southern Jews.

Didn’t LSU once run a study that found that like 91% of all Jewish people living in Louisiana went to Tulane?

Tulane was founded as a public university originally.
New Orleans has a sizable Jewish population though.

Virtually always. Several old synagogues around the city.
Baton Rouge is a much much smaller community. Virtually no Orthodox Community.
There is a book called The Jew Store you should check out. A lot of old southern pirt cities had decent sized communities.

Yes New Orleans was once home to a very large number of Jewish people and jewish companies. Merrill Lynch (founded in New Orleans by Jews), United Fruit Co. (Jewish), DH Homes/Maison Blanche/Godchauxs (all Jewish).
Baton Rouge however probably has 6 Jews in the entire city and they are waiting for Israel to fly them out of that oppressive shithole.

Maybe Newcomb plays a part in this

This person gets it.
Once established as a destination Jews continued. Same as the pipeline to Wisconsin.
Most people aren’t aware of the discrimination at universities prior to the 60s.

Before the Civil War, New Orleans was a port second only to New York. Lots of immigrants.
More fascinating than that was the Jewish population in rural Louisiana and Mississippi. One of the first settlers of my town was a Jewish immigrant from Prussia who fought in the civil war. One of the first mayors of Monroe was Jewish. Greenville, MS used to have a synagogue, etc. Most of those families have gone now, the descendants moving to larger cities like so many others.

Port Gibson has a Messianic Synagogue. Basically Jews who believe in Jesus. If I rememeber the sign it was serviced by the Jackson diocese.
It was a former orthodox synagogue.
