Or your wife, whomever does your clothes..
SIL did some laundry at our house and used 5 with one load.

All signs point to yes.

if she is using that many, she needs to just use the liquid in the wash...

I think my wife uses one, I've never started the dryer so I don't know.

Uh, one. Seems like 5 would make the clothes too fragrant and feel weird.

I use both. I find it helps with the static. I may or may not be wasting time/money.

I use one. My wife seemingly uses half a box per load.

I don't understand the need for fabric softener. What kind of fabrics y'all wearing?
My husband uses dryer sheets, I do not. Sometimes they leave oily spots on my blouses and I HATE that. I need to check the dryer more carefully after he does laundry.

Maybe she's trying to kill y'all in a house fire?
make sure she doesn't have some life insurance policy on you. Excessive dryer sheet usage can build up wax on your lint filter and cause a fire.
Dryer sheets should not be used with towels and pjs, BTW. It reduces towel absorbency and strips flame retardant clothes of their protective material.
But I'm sure she wasn't washing towels. Bama fans don't bathe.

this is actually why I quit using any kind of fabric softener...once a week I would get dressed for work in the morning only to find a damn oil spot somewhere on my clothes.
I now just buy detergent that makes my stuff smell good without having to deal with softener at all...

I use the liquid in the wash.
In the dryer I use 1-2
When I wash the bed sheets/comforter I go 3 max.

The sheets help with static
I'm not sure I've ever noticed the softening qualities one way or the other.
3 Max. Usually 1. Often 2.

1 should be plenty for a standard load. Bed linens or bath towels may require 2.
And I use Bounce Free because the scented ones make me break out & itch.
