If I want to conserve gas running a generator, how often and for how long should I run it to keep my refrigerator and freezer cold enough?
Should say I’m staying next door with a whole home generator for AC, but too far to run extension cords.

Fill some gallon ziplock bags with water and freeze them. Will buy you a day or 2 if you don’t open it

I would run each for an hour, twice a day.
Give it time to return to status quo temp.
Obviously, if the fridge or freezer shuts off. It’s done. May be less than an hour. May be longer.

Move your fridge to their garage. Plug it in, problem solved.

From sun up to sun down.. kept the genny off during the night hours.

If the freezer and fridge are full they will keep overnight without issue. If they aren't fill jugs with water to help build up mass.

It a bit of trial and error but if they’re not being opened as others have said freeze some ice blocks now. If not opened with ice blocks it could last 3-4 days. Without ice blocks probably 24-36 hours. So run it like 2 hours then break for 4 and check it. Then expand it to 6 and 8 and 12. But 2 hours will keep it frozen. Just depends on what’s in it and what the outside temp is.

1 to 4. Run it for an hour for every four hours the fridge will keep things cold. This applies to freezers too. But I am a little more conservative and will run 2 hours for every 4-6 hours.

Widely accepted rule of thumb on generator ratio to keep fridge cold.

In the past when we have lost power I run the fridge and freezers about 2-3 hours a day. I also make sure if someone is getting in them we all raid the fridge at the same time to conserve the temp. We have never lost anything and have been without power up to three days a few times.

Huh. I thought posters here and since we are in BR everyone would have 2 entire house generators. A backup in case the original generator encounters issues. I am confused since we can, as stated here, spend money at the same rate as Texas A&M. Mmmmmmk

Most generator mfg say that the generator need to be shut off for an hour or two at least once a day to rest.

My Honda gen says to change oil every 50 hour run time. So that is every 3 to 8 days depending on how much you run it each day.

After Laura I heard that one guy I knew ran his new generator 24 hrs every day for 21 days. On the 21 st. day, it burnt up.
